Recap

Muguruza started her match in fine fettle as she broke Putintseva twice on the way to claiming the opening set 6-2, successfully saving two break points against her all the while.

The WTA shared a look at the kind of tennis the Spaniard was playing:

The second set left much to be desired from Muguruza's point of view, however, as the pair broke each other four times apiece.

Poor serving particularly let down Muguruza—according to Pro Tennis Live, she got her first serve in just 46 per cent of the time.

Putintseva's shot-making also improved, as the WTA demonstrated:

The French Open champion twice missed the chance to serve out the match but was able to come out on top in a hard-fought tiebreaker.

As for Kerber, she exchanged breaks with Katerina Siniakova in the opening set before a second break of serve allowed her to serve it out after 38 minutes.

The German's passing shots were as strong as ever, which she illustrated as she raced to a 3-0 lead in the second:

To her credit, the Czech player put in a valiant effort to try to mount a comeback, per TennisTV:

It was not enough, however, as Kerber ensured she would not be the victim of an upset and saw out the victory.

Sixth seed Williams was not so lucky, as wild-card entry Peng stunned the veteran. After edging a hard-fought opening set, the Chinese broke the American twice as she powered through the second in short order.

The outsider had back surgery last year, and WTA Insider shared her thoughts on her journey back to fitness:

Keys and Mladenovic played out a thoroughly entertaining contest in their match, breaking each other several times apiece.

The Frenchwoman had the chance to serve out the opening set from one break up, but a stunning turnaround saw Keys break her twice to turn things around, per TennisTV:

Mladenovic continued to fight in the second set, but a combination of accurate serving and strong returning from Keys gave her the edge.

Meanwhile, Ferrer had to work for his win over Cuevas.

With both players resolute on their own serve, it took until the final game of the first set—with Ferrer leading 5-4—for either player to earn his first break-point opportunity. It was the Spaniard who earned it, and he converted to draw first blood.

The second set was even tighter, with neither Ferrer nor Cuevas earning a single chance to break. It went to a tiebreaker, where Ferrer showed his class to see out the match.

Ferrer will face Viktor Troicki or Fabio Fognini in the next round.
