Former NBA Player Darius Miles Filed for Bankruptcy in June
Former NBA player Darius Miles, who played with four teams over seven seasons from 2000 to 2009, filed for bankruptcy in June with assets worth $460,385 and liabilities totaling $1.57 million, Beth Hundsdorfer and George Pawlaczyk of the Belleville News-Democrat reported Saturday.
Hundsdorfer and Pawlaczyk highlighted some of the items Miles listed in his bankruptcy filing:
"Miles listed a $20,000 child support debt in his bankruptcy. He lost more than $100,000 in 2008 in a California real estate deal. Another real estate deal — with fellow investors former NFL Rams player Marshall Faulk and rapper Nelly — was mired in lawsuits over a Laclede's Landing property. Newspaper stories wrote about Miles rewarding himself with diamond jewelry.
"
Miles also listed 13 properties he owns, various trophies, signed jerseys and jewelry among his assets.
Former National Basketball Players Union vice president Adonal Foyle told Hundsdorfer and Pawlaczyk that it can be "difficult for players, especially those who didn't go to college, to be prepared to understand the business side of what they do."
Per Basketball-Reference.com, Miles earned nearly $62 million in his NBA career. That total doesn't include endorsement deals he may have had over the course of his career.
Miles seemed poised for a long and successful NBA career. After being named Illinois' Mr. Basketball as a high school senior in 2000, he became the highest-drafted high school player at the time the Los Angeles Clippers chose him third overall.
After Miles' playing career came to an end, he was arrested in August 2011 and later charged for allegedly attempting to bring a loaded gun through security at Lambert Airport.
Miles, who is 34 years old, also played for the Portland Trail Blazers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Memphis Grizzlies.
