Marquee Week 2 Games to Watch
New Orleans Saints at Houston Texans
The Houston Texans got a win in the first week of the preseason, a 24-13 victory against the San Francisco 49ers.
But it wasn't the most reassuring performance in the world, with new quarterback Brock Osweiler going just 4-of-7 for 27 yards before hitting the bench. Backup Tom Savage wound up throwing a pair of touchdowns.
That's not exactly the debut the Texans were likely hoping for, and from the sound of it, it's not what the new face of the franchise had hoped for either, as he told NFL Network:
It will be interesting to see if the Texans give Osweiler more run against the New Orleans Saints to help him develop a better rapport with his weapons.
As for those Saints, Week 1 was a 34-22 loss to the New England Patriots. The biggest note there besides a struggling defense trying to find its way is standout rookie receiver Michael Thomas.
Against the Patriots, Thomas caught four passes for 67 yards. That doesn't sound like much, but Drew Brees attempted one pass before calling it a day. Should Thomas keep emerging, he'll pair with Brandin Cooks, and it might not matter much if the New Orleans defense never gets it together.
San Francisco 49ers at Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos were the team unable to keep Osweiler in town, losing a groomed Peyton Manning successor in free agency and resorting to Mark Sanchez under center.
Sanchez had a better debut for his new team than Osweiler did, at least. He led the Broncos to a 22-0 shutout of the Chicago Bears, completing 10 of 13 attempts for 99 yards with a score and a pick.
Despite this, the Broncos remain adamant the quarterback situation hasn't resolved itself. Trevor Siemian seems to remain in the running for the gig and went 7-of-12 for 88 yards against the Bears. It was enough for the team to decide both should get runs with the first team this weekend, according to NFL Network's James Palmer:
It's an interesting development for a team like the 49ers, who look to continue breaking in a revamped defense and get Blaine Gabbert ready for the season under center. With Colin Kaepernick injured, the preseason has become about getting Gabbert reps with his weapons.
The main attraction on the 49ers is No. 7 pick DeForest Buckner, a defensive lineman the team hopes can continue to show gigantic strides and eventually cause a positive ripple effect throughout the unit. He'll have the chance to get an extended look at a first-team offense this weekend while the Broncos attempt to get two guys starter reps.
Kansas City Chiefs at Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams continue to soak up the spotlight this preseason.
Interestingly enough, the team went out and won its debut in a new city, besting the Dallas Cowboys 28-24. The team would have wanted rookie quarterback Jared Goff to shine in the process, but it was Sean Mannion who stole the show with 147 yards and three scores.
At the very least, the Rams were effective and won the game, the latter being big news for a franchise that hasn't won more than seven games in a season since 2006.
"I had to remind them it was a preseason game," head coach Jeff Fisher said after the win, according to ESPN.com. "It was as if we had just clinched the playoff as far as they were concerned."
Taking the preseason seriously is a start, as is taking the same intensity into this weekend's encounter with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Those Chiefs came up one point short against the Seahawks last week, 17-16, but they boast big-play threats such as De'Anthony Thomas, who caught three passes for 46 yards.
The Chiefs have a quarterback battle of their own, with Nick Foles elbowing for room behind Alex Smith, so the team's deep crop of weapons should remain on display most of the night and provide the rebuilding and relocated Rams with an adequate challenge.
