US Handball Coach Says LeBron James Could Be World's Best with 6 Months of Work
There's no denying that the Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in the history of sports. But could he excel at any sport he tried?
The four-time NBA MVP was an all-state wide receiver at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School (Akron, Ohio). He's even dabbled a bit in baseball.
As for the sport of handball, U.S. national team coach Javier Garcia-Cuesta believes James could be among the world's elite in almost no time.
"Maybe six months," Garcia-Cuesta said, per Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post. "This is just a hypothetical. He has everything. When you see him playing, your mouth drops."
Six months is a very optimistic outlook, considering the best handball players in the world have been honing their skills for many years. But again, James is an extraordinary talent. His incredible athleticism gives him a nice head start when it comes to picking up a new sport, and a game that requires running, jumping and throwing would be right in his wheelhouse.
Denmark handball star Mikkel Hansen also believes the Cavs superstar would be able to make the transition.
"It's difficult to talk about that," Hansen said, per Kilgore. "I admire LeBron James very much. I'm a big basketball fan. The way he sees the court, his vision for the game, is very impressive. There you would have a good start. And physically, he is amazing. But you also need to throw the ball. So, yeah. Maybe."
The chances of James switching over to handball anytime soon are less than zero. However, everyone loves to speculate on how the three-time NBA champion would do in a different sport. While it will probably never happen, he certainly has made believers out of many, including some pretty notable figures in the handball world.
