Wichita State Coach Gregg Marshall Restrained from Refs in Heated Confrontation

Kyle NewportJun 3, 2018

College basketball's regular season doesn't tip off for a few months, but don't tell that to Wichita State Shockers coach Gregg Marshall.

His intensity level is always the same, no matter the stakes.

On Tuesday night, the Shockers played an exhibition game against McGill University in Montreal, and the coach went on a tirade in the fourth quarter. He was ejected after getting hit with a second technical foul and had to be restrained by his players and staff as he angrily confronted the officials.

And it wasn't just a two-second outburst—it lasted for a good minute.

Marshall explained what led to his outburst to ESPN's Andy Katz on Wednesday:

"

There were players with stitches, concussions, not keeping score accurately, a bloodbath, then touch fouls on us. I'm not happy nor proud of the reaction but when is enough, enough? I want my players to know I've got their back. Once ejected, I wanted the ref to know exactly my impression of his work.

"

Despite his ire, the 53-year-old said his protest had limits.

"I wasn’t going to do anything physical, but I wanted to make sure they understood what I felt was happening was incorrect and wrong,” Marshall said, per Paul Suellentrop of the Wichita Eagle.

The heated confrontation showed Shockers forward Darral Willis Jr. something he may not have known about his coach.

“He’s a strong old man,” Willis said, per Suellentrop.

Once things calmed down, Wichita State pulled out a 77-71 victory. Per the Associated Press, Marshall has been suspended for the final game of the Shockers' exhibition tour.
