Donald Trump Could Ask Tom Brady to Speak at GOP Convention
Today in sports-related Donald Trump news: possible speakers for the GOP convention.
In case you hadn't heard, Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee for president of the United States. The Republican National Convention will be held July 18-21 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, and in a move that will surprise exactly no one, Trump plans to shake things up.
On the topic of convention speakers, Trump said at an event Friday, per Nick Corasaniti of the New York Times: "We're going to do it a little different, if it's OK. I'm thinking about getting some of the great sports people who like me a lot."
He added, "Our country needs to see winners. We don't see winners anymore. We have a bunch of clowns running this country."
According to Corasaniti, Trump listed a few possible candidates, including former Indiana basketball head coach Bobby Knight, NFL quarterbacks Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger, NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France and UFC president Dana White.
It should be noted, however, that not all of the aforementioned parties are official Trump endorsers, nor have any been confirmed as convention speakers. It doesn't sound like they have even been asked.
There could be even more options if Trump is serious about a sporty convention. Sports folks who have endorsed Trump include former Notre Dame football head coach Lou Holtz, golfer John Daly and Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan, according to Charlotte Wilder of For The Win.
Ryan, in fact, introduced Trump at a rally in Buffalo, New York, in April. Then again, Trump also credited him with winning two AFC championships he hadn't won, so Ryan might not want to make a repeat appearance.
Stay tuned.
