Recap

The schedule for Day 1 was obliterated in Paris as the rain refused to stop to allow a prolonged period of afternoon play.

However, a number of matches beat the weather as a host of contests were postponed until Monday, putting huge pressure on the organisers.

Kyrgios showed his fiery temper once more, but the Australian found safe passage into the next round. He defeated Cecchinato 7-6(6), 7-6(6), 6-4 on a bleak day in the French capital.

Kyrgios was forced to save two set points on his way to the win and stated how difficult the day had been, per ATPWorldTour.com:

"

I thought it was really tough. I thought when I woke up this morning and saw the rain I knew it was going to be heavy conditions. I knew it was going to be a bit of a leveller out there. We were both going to be a little bit cold.

I thought he played really well, the way he played the dropshots and he was very crafty. I knew it was going to be a tough match. He had two set points in the second set. I mean, I was a bit lucky at times, but I'm just happy to get through.

The controversial Aussie bickered with umpire Carlos Ramos during the match and was issued a code violation.

However, it didn't affect his overall game as his recent good form continued in Paris.

Albot took the No. 19 seed through a five-set ordeal, but Paire found an extra gear to prevail 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 against the brave qualifier.

"It's a relief," said Paire, per ATPWorldTour.com. "It was not easy today. Heavy conditions today. I didn't serve well. So the match was tough for me, even though I did get off to a good start. First round at the French Open, it was complicated, but I'm delighted because I have advanced to the next round. I think I dug deep today."

Paire set up a next-round battle with Teymuraz Gabashvili, who beat Donald Young 7-6(1), 6-2, 6-3.

Kvitova was forced to raise her game in her first-round match against Kovinic, losing the second set on her way to the win.

The Czech strolled through the opening set 6-2 but clearly struggled as the conditions worsened.

Montenegro's Kovinic claimed the second set 6-4, but the eventual winner edged out her opponent 7-5 in the final set.

Kvitova made 10 double-faults on her way to the win, often letting her opponent see light at the end of the tunnel.

Kvitova also made 29 unforced errors to give Kovinic a foothold, but the seed's overall class paid dividends in the final points of the last set.

Kyrgios is one of the most entertaining players on the men's circuit at present, but once again he allowed himself to be wound up by external factors.

The 21-year-old has all of the natural talent to go far in a Grand Slam event, but he will need further discipline if he wants to prevail on Paris' clay.
