Indianapolis Colts Mock Draft and Big Board: Updated Day 3 Predictions

Kyle J. RodriguezApr 30, 2016

Three rounds into the draft, and the Indianapolis Colts have not disappointed any of the pundits clamoring for them to upgrade the offensive line.

Not only have the Colts drafted the best center in the class, but they also selected a developmental tackle with a high ceiling who can be a potential right tackle as early as 2016. The team also took a great athlete at safety, T.J. Green out of Clemson, adding speed and athleticism to a unit that desperately needed it.

But even while significantly adding to the offensive line, the Colts didn't address any immediate needs for the defense in 2016. Green likely won't play much at all in 2015, and there are still significant holes at linebacker and pass-rushers.

Still, the team could find a gem in the later rounds and should address the defensive depth on Day 3 as well. Fortunately, the team did trade down in the second round, picking up another fourth-round pick and seventh-round pick, giving them five picks over the final day. That's enough flexibility to fill needs at running back and wide receiver while still addressing the defense.

So what will the team look for in the next 24 hours? Here are a few potential options.

Round 4

2 of 4

Pick No. 116: LB Joshua Perry, Ohio State

The Colts desperately need athleticism on defense and haven't done much to address that yet in this draft.

Joshua Perry of Ohio State is a good athlete—the best left in the draft at inside linebackerand has the production in college to back it up. He's not a great coverage linebacker, but you won't get a complete player this late in the draft. At the very least, Perry could develop behind D'Qwell Jackson as a future "Mike."

Pick No. 125 (from Packers): RB Kenneth Dixon, Louisiana Tech

Though he's had some minor injuries and is not the biggest back, Dixon might be the second-best back in this class after Ezekiel Elliott. He and Frank Gore would be an ideal couple going into 2016, with the potential for Dixon to take over full time. He is athletic and has a hungry, aggressive running style to match with it. He is the ideal mid-round running back prospect.

Round 5

3 of 4

Pick No. 155: EDGE Tyrone Holmes, Montana

The Colts desperately need to address the pass rush on the outside, so Tyrone Holmes may be their best shot among players left in this draft. Though he's not a particularly good run defender, he has an athletic build (which the Colts have already been eyeing with picks like T.J. Green and Le'Raven Clark) and the ability to bend the edge.

Holmes would be another project player, but that's what you get when you are looking for edge players this late in the draft. A player with the burst off the line and ability to bend around tackles is always worth investing in for a cheap price.

Round 7

4 of 4

Pick No. 239: WR Tajae Sharpe, UMass

He has a thin frame at 6'2", 194 pounds, but Tajae Sharpe has all of the bottom-half tools to be a late-round steal in the NFL draft. By that, I mean he has great footwork and route-running skills that will let him produce as a depth or rotational receiver relatively early.

There are some questions about his ability to read coverages, but he's shown improvement in those areas this last year, per Lance Zierlein of NFL.com.

Pick No. 248 (from Packers): DL Darius Latham, Indiana

Self-control is the name of the game for Darius Latham. The former Hoosier has great hand usage and a thick body, but he can be inconsistent and has some conditioning questions. If Latham can mature and develop an NFL work ethic, he has the ability to be a plus run-stuffer in the NFL, with the foot quickness to potentially develop as an interior pass-rusher as well.

At this point in the draft, he's worth the flier.
