Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters 2016 Results: Wednesday Tennis Scores, Latest Schedule
Jiri Vesely pulled off one of the tennis season's biggest upsets so far by stunning top seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic in three sets Wednesday, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, in the second round of the 2016 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters.
Tomas Berdych, who lost to Djokovic in the highly competitive championship match last year, also saw his tournament run come to an early end. Upstart qualifier Damir Dzumhur eliminated the Czech veteran in three sets, 6-4, 6-7 (1), 6-3.
Let's check out a complete list of results from Wednesday's action at the Monte Carlo Country Club. That's followed by a recap of the action and a look ahead to Thursday's Round 3 play.

It's hard to quantify the magnitude of the upset since Djokovic loses so infrequently, but perhaps this stat tells the story best: Coming into the event, the top-ranked player in the world had four tournament titles this season, while Vesely had just four match victories.
One factor in the surprising result was likely each player's form on clay. Djokovic was playing his first clay-court event of the campaign and never seemed to find a comfort zone against the lefty. Meanwhile, Vesely reached the semifinals on the surface last week in Marrakech, Morocco.
Of course, it's still a match the Serbian superstar would be expected to win almost every time. He just didn't look like his usual dominant self. Whether it was the transition between surfaces or just an off day, it opened the door for an upset.
Full credit goes to Vesely for rising to the occasion to earn the biggest victory of his career. Brad Gilbert of ESPN commented on the unlikely outcome:
TennisTV highlighted match point:
Afterward, even the 22-year-old Czech Republic native said he wasn't sure if such a result was even possible, as noted by the ATP World Tour: "I'm just very, very happy. I really had no idea that I really would be able to beat Novak today."
Djokovic will be just fine in the long run, and the extra time off could actually turn into a positive ahead of a busy stretch in the spring and summer. The bigger question is whether the victory can spark a run of success for Vesely following a lackluster start to 2016.
Dzumhur's upset of Berdych isn't on the same level, but it was still an impressive showing. It also marks his second high-profile victory in as many tournaments after he beat Rafael Nadal, who retired in the third set after the Bosnian took a 3-0 lead in Miami.
It's a disappointing setback for Berdych, who didn't have any bad losses on his resume this season before falling to the No. 99 player in the world. Jose Morgado of the Diario Record pointed out the defeat will also cause a ranking drop since he was defending so many points:
On the flip side, the ATP World Tour provided the upbeat reaction from Dzumhur:
Elsewhere, Nadal and Stan Wawrinka both advanced to the third round without much drama. Along with Djokovic, the trio has won each of the past 11 titles in Monte Carlo. Nadal won eight in a row starting in 2005, and Wawrinka captured the trophy in 2014, in between Djokovic's two triumphs.
Since the top-ranked player is now out, Nadal and Wawrinka are the players to beat. But there's still plenty of star power in the field, with Roger Federer and Andy Murray alive in the event as well.

One of the key questions as the clay-court campaign kicks off is what version of Nadal will show up. It's unclear whether fans should expect the virtually unstoppable nine-time French Open champion or the player who's failed to advance beyond the quarterfinals of a major since Roland Garros in 2014.
He started his run in Monte Carlo with a comfortable win over Aljaz Bedene. He figures to receive a far more telling test from rising star Dominic Thiem on Thursday. Pau Ferragut of Ultima Hora Radio noted the Spaniard is looking forward to the challenge.
"I hope to be ready for tomorrow against a tough opponent like Thiem," Nadal said. "I practiced well on clay in Mallorca and last days here."
That match headlines what should be a competitive day of action, with four of the eight matches featuring seeded opponents.
Federer, who showed no signs of significant rust against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in his first match since the Australian Open in January, will face off with Roberto Bautista Agut. Their previous encounters have been lopsided, as Ricky Dimon of the Grandstand showcased:
The most vital thing for the 17-time Grand Slam champion is getting his match fitness all the way back before the French Open in late May. A couple of deep runs would help in that effort.
All told, Vesely's upset of Djokovic has set a high standard for the rest of the tournament, but the third round should be entertaining in its own right.
