Westbrook Ties Record for Most Triple-Doubles in a Month
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook recorded his seventh triple-double in March during Monday's 119-100 win over the Toronto Raptors, tying Michael Jordan's record (April 1989) for the most in a calendar month, per NBA.com/stats.
Despite sitting out the final few minutes of a blowout victory, Westbrook finished Monday's contest with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists. He also added a steal and three turnovers in his seventh triple-double performance through 14 appearances in March.
He still has every opportunity to break Jordan's record, as the Thunder have two games remaining before the end of the month, first playing the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday and then facing the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday.
Just as impressive as the monthly record, Westbrook now has 16 triple-doubles for the season, leaving him only two shy of Magic Johnson's post-merger (1976-77), single-season record of 18 that was set back in 1981-82, per NBA.com/stats.
Going back to the 1976-77 merger, only three players have recorded 16 or more triple-doubles in a single season, with Westbrook, Fat Lever (16 in 1986-87) and Johnson (1981-82, 1982-82, 1988-89) doing the honors.
Westbrook has eight games left on the schedule to break Johnson's record, but with his Thunder essentially locked in as the Western Conference's No. 3 seed, it is possible they'll rest key players down the stretch, potentially hurting Westbrook's bid to make history.
