Brian Windhorst Causes Buzz by Looking Down at His Phone on 'SportsCenter'

Kyle NewportMar 29, 2016

ESPN NBA writer Brian Windhorst found himself as a Twitter trending topic on Tuesday, but not for breaking news or anything like that.

It was because many believed he had fallen asleep during an interview on SportsCenter. In reality, he hadn't.

The unusual moment happened while he was doing a one-on-one with host Cari Champion. As Champion asked him a question, Windhorst glanced down at his phone, making it look like he nodded off momentarily.

A few awkward seconds of silence even had the SportsCenter host wondering if there had been technical difficulties.

Brian Windhorst's mentions on Twitter quickly filled with people tweeting about the basketball reporter "falling asleep" on live television.

Wanting to set the record straight, the 38-year-old Windhorst took to Twitter:

Champion acknowledged that it may have appeared as though her interviewee had dozed off, but she reiterated what he tweeted:

Just to be safe, Windhorst should rest up as the regular season winds down. He needs to make sure he has no problem staying awake on the job through June as Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James chases his third championship.

Update from Wednesday, March 30

Of course, the situation couldn't go without being referenced on SportsCenter on Wednesday:
