Nowitzki Passes Nash for 15th on All-Time List for 3-Pointers Made
Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki sunk a pair of three-point shots during Wednesday's 109-103 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, moving past former teammate Steve Nash for sole possession of 15th place on the NBA's all-time list for three-pointers made, per Sportsnet Stats.
Nowitzki entered the game in a tie with Nash at 1,685 career treys, needing just one more to stand alone as a member of the top 15.
It appeared Nowitzki might have to wait for another night, but he finally hit his first three-pointer of Wednesday's game with 10 minutes, 18 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, cutting Portland's lead to 86-76.
The 37-year-old forward rode a magnificent fourth quarter to a final stat line of 21 points, nine rebounds, three assists, one block and three turnovers in 36 minutes, but it wasn't quite enough to overcome a 27-point performance from Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard.
The loss was Dallas' eighth in 11 March games, as the team is struggling even with Nowitzki averaging 24.5 points over 33.2 minutes with a sterling 53.6 field-goal percentage.
The lack of help from Nowitzki's supporting cast doesn't figure to improve in the coming weeks, as starting forward Chandler Parsons is now expected to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
It appears Nowitzki's red-hot form may not provide quite enough juice for his team to hang onto one of the final playoff spots in the Western Conference.
