Westbrook Records 3rd Consecutive Triple-Double, 6th in March
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook recorded his third consecutive triple-double—his sixth during the month of March—in Tuesday's 111-107 win over the Houston Rockets, making him the first player with six or more triple-doubles in a calendar month since Michael Jordan had seven in April 1989, per NBA.com/Stats.
Despite missing all seven of his three-point attempts, Westbrook finished Tuesday's game with 21 points, 13 rebounds and 15 assists, more than making up for a shaky shooting performance and his four turnovers.
The 27-year-old guard has an NBA-best 15 triple-doubles this season, with his Thunder owning an impressive 15-0 record in those games, per Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN Stats & Info).
Oklahoma City has a modest 34-22 record when Westbrook doesn't put up a triple-double, including an ugly 1-5 mark in such instances this month.
With five games still remaining in March, Westbrook has a good chance to pass Jordan's record for the most triple-doubles in a calendar month over the past 30 years.
Of course, Jordan set his mark during a month in which he played just 12 games, and he also had a triple-double in each of the final four games of the prior month.
This all happened during a remarkable 1988-89 season in which he averaged 32.5 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.
Westbrook enters Thursday's game against the Utah Jazz with averages of 23.7 points, 10.5 assists and 7.7 rebounds.
