Sunday Action
Florida 74, Ohio State 66
Marc Loving and JaQuan Lyle did all they could to move Ohio State past Florida on Sunday, combining for 39 points, but the rest of the Buckeyes weren't up to the task, and Florida advanced, winning 74-66.
Florida's balanced attack was the key. Dorian Finney-Smith (16 points, 12 rebounds), Kasey Hill (15 points, five assists), Kevarrius Hayes (14 points) and Justin Leon (12 points, seven rebounds) led the way for the Gators.
While Loving (20 points, four rebounds, two steals) and Lyle (19 points, 11 rebounds) were excellent, Florida held two of Ohio State's starters, Mickey Mitchell and Trevor Thompson, scoreless.
Florida opened both halves with 14-2 runs, and while Ohio State clawed its way to just a one-point deficit at halftime, the Buckeyes never recovered from the Gators' strong start to the second half.
Kevin Brockway of the Gainesville Sun gave a lot of credit to Florida's coaching in the win:
"First-year coach Mike White has shown an adept ability to draw up in-bounds plays underneath the basket. Two in-bounds plays led to wide open Florida layups. White notched UF’s 21st win of the season, tying Tommy Bartlett (21-4 in 1966-67) for the most wins by a first-year UF coach.
Yes, the Gators (21-14) fell short of the goal of reaching the NCAA Tournament, but it’s easy for some in the Florida fanbase to forget that he inherited a 16-17 team that didn’t even make the postseason last year. So there have been some signs of progress in 2015-16.
"
The Buckeyes were without Keita Bates-Diop (illness) and Jae'Sean Tate (shoulder), but the season ended on a disappointing note for the Buckeyes and head coach Thad Matta, as the team's 14 losses this season were the most of his collegiate coaching career.
One positive is that the team is expected to have all of its starters back next season.
"I've coached this team with the future in mind," Matta acknowledged after the game, per Eric Seger of Eleven Warriors. "There's no question about that."
The Gators now await the winner of No. 1 Monmouth vs. No. 4 George Washington.
Saint Mary's 77, Georgia 65
Saint Mary's 12-point win over Georgia on Sunday in the second round of the NIT not only secured it a place in the quarterfinals against Valparaiso on Tuesday, but it set a new program record for wins in a single season with 29.
The Gaels had four starters record double digits, led by the 15 points of Emmett Naar. Forward Dane Pineau proved to be a force down low as he recorded a solid double-double of 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field with 11 rebounds.
Down 15-12 with 12:25 to go in the first half, Saint Mary's sparked a 15-2 run to gain a double-digit lead and never looked back.
Georgia pulled to as close as four in the second half, but another Saint Mary's run, this one 17-4, crushed any hopes of a possible Bulldogs comeback.
Saint Mary's was able to build and maintain such a comfortable lead thanks to its shooting from the field, as it produced at a 50 percent clip on Sunday night. Georgia, on the other hand, didn't even shoot 40 percent as it hit 25 of 66 shots from the field.
While Saint Mary's might still have hard feelings toward the NCAA tournament selection committee for leaving it out of the Big Dance, it's proved in the NIT that it is going to be one tough team to beat.
A big test in No. 1 Valparaiso, a team that also garnered at-large-bid talks, will prove if the Gaels are really the team to beat in this tournament.
