Sunday Preview

In an intriguing contest, Villanova and Iowa will be tipping off in Sunday's first game. While 'Nova cruised in its opening game, Iowa needed a buzzer-beating putback from Adam Woodbury to get past Temple in overtime.
While the Wildcats have their normal cadre of dangerous guards—led by Josh Hart, Ryan Arcidiacono and Jalen Brunson—the Wildcats also have size inside and play excellent defense, holding opponents to 63.7 points per game, 20th in the nation.
That makes Villanova a bit more balanced than in recent years, though the Wildcats are vulnerable if their perimeter shots aren't landing.
Iowa is heavily reliant on Jarrod Uthoff and Peter Jok on the offensive end, though Iowa's ability to rebound on the offensive end was the Achilles' heel for Temple in the first round. If Iowa can slow down the pace and can control the game in the paint, it will give 'Nova problems. But if Villanova gets hot from the field, it's a tough team to beat.
Notre Dame will face upstarts Stephen F. Austin in the day's second game. The Lumberjacks were impressive in a convincing win over West Virginia, as Thomas Walkup exploded for 33 points, nine rebounds, four assists, four steals and a block in an utterly dominant performance.
Add Walkup to the list of mid-major players who took a star turn in the NCAA tournament, as Jeff Borzello of ESPN noted:
Harold Arceneaux, of course, led Weber State to an upset of North Carolina in the 1999 NCAA tournament after scoring 36 points. Weber State lost in the second round to Florida in overtime but not before Arceneaux posted 33 points.
So yes, Walkup will be trying to one-up Arceneaux. But if Notre Dame can stymie Walkup, it will win. It's that simple. If it can't, however, Walkup and Demetrious Floyd are more than capable of taking the Lumberjacks to the Sweet 16.
The day's third game will feature one of the top scorers in the country, Oklahoma's Buddy Hield against VCU, which will be looking for its second straight upset. Without question, Hield is the straw that stirs Oklahoma's drink, especially on the offensive end, and he's as explosive a scorer as there is in the nation, as ESPN Stats & Information tweeted:
Game 4 will be a battle of the Cinderellas, as No. 10 Syracuse faces No. 15 Middle Tennessee. Don't expect the Orange to underestimate Syracuse.
As Brian Bennett of ESPN wrote, "Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said an NBA scout told him earlier this week that Middle Tennessee State was a talented team. 'When you watch them play, it's obvious,' Boeheim said."
Middle Tennessee shocked the nation by beating No. 2 Michigan State, while Syracuse justified its selection after being a bubble team by knocking off Dayton. Middle Tennessee's ability to hit shots from beyond the three-point arc could give Syracuse trouble, though the Syracuse length and traditional, swarming zone defense will be a big advantage for the ACC power.
Hawaii and the talented Stefan Jankovic will be looking to continue their own surprising run in the tournament against Maryland. Melo Trimble (14.5 PPG, 5.0 APG, 1.3 SPG) paces the Terps, though they have a balanced attack and five players averaging double-digit points.
The Cinderellas continue with Northern Iowa, as it'll face Texas A&M and look to continue its domination over the Lone Star State. The Panthers are surely still buzzing after Paul Jesperson's half-court buzzer-beater against Texas. But the Aggies and star Danuel House cruised in the opening round and have an excellent frontcourt that will give most teams trouble, including Northern Iowa.
In one of Sunday's rare games that won't include a Cinderella, Xavier will face Wisconsin in a matchup of Xavier's explosive offense against Wisconsin's stingy defense. The difference may be that while Xavier is also solid on the defensive end (29th in defensive efficiency, according to KenPom.com), Wisconsin has its struggles offensively (87th in offensive efficiency).
Finally, No. 1 Oregon will face No. 8 St. Joe's in the day's final game. Few teams are hotter than Oregon, as the Ducks have won nine games in a row and 15 of their last 17. And St. Joe's has faced just one team on Oregon's level this season, Villanova, losing 86-72 in December.
Nonetheless, the one-two punch of Isaiah Miles (18.4 PPG) and DeAndre Bembry (17.5 PPG) will give Oregon plenty to be worried about.
