Thursday night's opener brought an exciting start to the CBI after Morehead State was able to pull out the victory in a closely contested matchup.
In the first half alone, there were seven ties and 14 lead changes despite the Eagles having led by 11 points. Morehead State still managed to hold a 44-43 halftime lead.
Forward Lyonell Gaines put up a solid double-double with 20 points, a game high, along with 10 rebounds in the win.
After Morehead State retook the lead early in the second half at 46-45, it never relinquished the advantage. Siena didn't let the Eagles get too far ahead, as it never trailed by more than eight, but Morehead State's depth was too much for the Saints to handle.
The Eagles had 11 different players score on Tuesday night, as fresh legs allowed them to control the pace, run the floor and force Siena to try to keep up with them. In comparison, the Saints had only two players off the bench record points.
Another aspect of the game that helped Morehead State pull out the win was its ability to control the glass. The Eagles, much in part to Gaines' dominance, out-rebounded Siena by 10, including 12 offensive rebounds compared to Siena's four.
Now with an extra day to rest, Morehead State can start preparing for its next opponent—either Duquesne or Omaha—as it'll look to keep up the high level of play in the CBI quarterfinals.
