NCAA Tournament 2016: Bracket Picks, Live Stream for First Four Day 1 Schedule

Danny WebsterMar 15, 2016

The First Four is a brilliant concept, and this year's First Four is probably the best slate of games since the NCAA tournament expanded.

The first two games on Tuesday feature some familiar names. It's not often these play-in games offer teams like Wichita State and Florida Gulf Coast, but destiny has called us all together to watch these games and they will be fascinating contests.

Florida Gulf Coast vs. Fairleigh Dickinson

Anybody who knows anything about college basketball knows about Dunk City.

The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles are back in the NCAA tournament for the first time since their improbable run to the Sweet 16 in 2013 before eventually being ousted by the Florida Gators. That's when the Eagles were a No. 15 seed. They're a No. 16 seed this year, and no 16 seed has ever beaten a No. 1 seed. However, it wouldn't surprise anyone if FGCU were the first to accomplish that feat.

FGCU isn't know for its flashy dunks anymore, but the Eagles are a fun team led by Marc Eddy Norelia averaging close to a double-double (17.2 points, 9.2 rebounds). Freshman guard Zach Johnson has also been a pleasant surprise for FGCU, averaging 11.2 points this year.

Fairleigh Dickinson is also a great story. The Knights won five in a row to enter the tournament, including a Northeast Conference tournament championship win over top-seed Wagner. At 18-14, Fairleigh Dickinson is led by four sophomores. More specifically, leading scorers Darian Anderson and Earl Potts are the ones who carry the team each night.

Fairleigh Dickinson had to make a late surge in order to get to this point. But when thinking of Florida Gulf Coast, magic comes to mind. Realistically, the Eagles won't beat North Carolina, but they will get a win over the Knights on Tuesday.

Vanderbilt Commodores vs. Wichita State Shockers

Hey, it's Wichita State. Remember the Shockers? They've been shocking the world the last three seasons.
And here they are again. Gregg Marshall's crew is back in the tournament with a chance to shock the world once more.

Wichita State is led by two familiar faces in Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet. The two seniors have been through the wringer multiple times. They were freshmen on the team that made the Final Four in 2013, and the Shockers went 35-1 in the pair's sophomore season.

If there's a team that knows a thing or two about playing on the big stage, it would be this Wichita State team. And if there's a more perfect matchup in this First Four contest, it's the Shockers taking on Vanderbilt, as ESPN.com's Jeff Borzello noted:

Vanderbilt entered the year ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. It's safe to say the Commodores have underachieved, and part of that was their difficult nonconference schedule. They played Kansas, Baylor and Purdue in nonconference play while also securing home-court wins over the top two teams in the SEC, Kentucky and Texas A&M.

Although the 19-13 record doesn't say much, Vanderbilt is a good team that prides itself on protecting the rim. The Commodores were the top shot-blocking team in the SEC this year, led by 7'0" big man Luke Kornet's three swats per game. Kornet is the anchor on defense while Wade Baldwin and Damian Jones lead the scoring department.

If Borzello thinks this would've been Final Four-worthy, then it needs to be appreciated as a first-day game. This game doesn't bode well for the Arizona Wildcats, who have to play the winner. It'll come down to defense and who makes the most plays at the rim. That'll be Vanderbilt, as the Commodores will move on with a two-point win.
