NCAA Basketball Bracket 2016: Latest Bracketology Before Selection Sunday

Mike NorrisMar 12, 2016

Just one day remains before Selection Sunday when bubble teams learn of their NCAA tournament fate and the teams already penciled in find out which seeds await.

While the seeds remain a mystery until they are unveiled at 5:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, there are two teams that most likely will have No. 1 seeds by their names no matter what happens in their respective tournament championship matchups.

The Kansas Jayhawks (29-4), No. 1 in the land and riding a 13-game win streak, should be the top seed in the tournament even if they lose Saturday to the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Big 12 championship. The Villanova Wildcats (29-4) are in the same boat as the Jayhawks and will be playing a No. 16 seed in the first round.

After those two squads, predicting the seeds gets tougher. Here's a look at the No. 1-4 seeds in some bracket predictions, along with the Last Four In and First Four Out categories:

What Will Remain the Same?

Kansas and Villanova are locks for No. 1 seeds.

Even if they each lose by 30 in their respective tournament championship games (which won't happen), they've done enough to remain on the top line.

Both would have 29 wins, a regular-season championship and two wins in their conference tournaments. CBS Sports Bracketologist Jerry Palm went as far as to say no matter what happens with the Jayhawks on Saturday, no team will be seeded higher come Sunday:

Outside of Kansas and Villanova, there isn't much else that can be predicted with much certainty. The North Carolina Tar Heels, Michigan State Spartans and Virginia Cavaliers all have a case for a No. 1 seed if they win their respective tournaments, but a loss will likely land them a No. 2 or No. 3 seed.

What Will Change?

As mentioned, a lot can still happen between now and Sunday. Michigan State is one of the most curious cases out there.

After a Big Ten quarterfinal blowout win over the Ohio State Buckeyes on Friday, the Spartans are now 26-5 with one of their losses coming without Player of the Year candidate Denzel Valentine.

He proved just how versatile he can be against the Buckeyes, per SportsCenter:

Although the Spartans finished in second place behind the Indiana Hoosiers in the conference, if they win the Big Ten tournament, they will have victories in 13 of their past 14 games, which would make it hard for anyone to keep them off the top line.

In fact, prior to the start of the Big Ten tournament, the Spartans were tied with the Jayhawks as the betting favorites to cut down the nets in Houston on Final Four weekend, per Odds Shark.

As of now, Bracket Matrix and ESPN's Joe Lunardi have Michigan State as No. 2, but you'd have to think it will change should Valentine and Co. win their next two games.

Most of the other No. 2-4 seeds are nearly impossible to predict, as the outcomes of Saturday and Sunday conference tournament games will shake up the picture quite a bit.
