Teams receive compensatory draft picks if they lose "more or better" compensatory free agents than gained in the previous season, per NFL Communications. That means that compensatory free agents lost in 2015 allow teams to acquire these selections in 2016.
Those picks can only come in Rounds 3-6, and the standing of the selection is based off the quality of the player lost to free agency.
NFL Communications broke down how the teams involved came to getting their picks:
While these picks are usually an afterthought, there have been some big names that were chosen with compensatory selections.
Super Bowl XLII hero and former New York Giants wide receiver David Tyree was chosen in the sixth round, 211th overall. He enjoyed a six-year career that was highlighted by his helmet catch in the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots, as the NFL showed:
The Pittsburgh Steelers' all-time leader in catches, yards and touchdown receptions also was a compensatory draft pick, as Hines Ward went in the third round, 92nd overall.
But the most significant compensatory pick came in 2000, when the Patriots used the 199th overall pick in the sixth round to take quarterback Tom Brady out of the University of Michigan.
Brady is currently fifth on the NFL's all-time passing list with 58,028 yards to complement four Super Bowl rings, as he's become one of the best to ever play the game.
While 2016's crop of picks might not provide a player that creates such an everlasting impact, teams could find a steal in the later rounds with these acquired selections.
