The NIT selection committee will have to see which teams are left out of the NCAA tournament in order to make its decisions. That's obviously why the selection show is three hours after the NCAA's.
If there are any teams that won an NCAA Division I regular-season conference title and didn't make the NCAA tournament, then they will receive automatic qualification to the NIT.
That already creates speculation on some of the mid-major conference regular-season champs that didn't win their respective postseason tournaments:
| North Florida | Atlantic Sun | 22-11 | Florida Gulf Coast |
| High Point | Big South | 21-10 | UNC-Asheville |
| Hofstra | Colonial | 24-9 | UNC-Wilmington |
| Valparaiso | Horizon | 26-6 | Green Bay |
| Monmouth | MAAC | 27-7 | Iona |
| Wichita State | Missouri Valley | 24-8 | Northern Iowa |
| Wagner | NEC | 22-10 | Fairleigh Dickinson |
| Belmont, Tennessee Martin, Murray State | OVC | 20-11, 19-14, 17-14 | Austin Peay |
| Bucknell | Patriot | 17-13 | Holy Cross |
| Saint Mary's | West Coast | 27-5 | Gonzaga |
After those automatic berths are given, the committee will then select the best remaining teams to round out the field of 32 teams.
The first two rounds will be played on campus sites before the semifinals and championship game take center stage at the world's most famous arena in Manhattan.
