Rio Open 2016: Monday Tennis Scores, Results, Updated Schedule
The first round at the Rio Open commenced on Monday, though rainy conditions cut much of the action short. Below, we'll take a look back at the day's results along with a look forward to some of the interesting storylines in this year's tournament.
Men's Results
| Guido Pella | 7 | 5 | 7 |
| (4) John Isner | 6 | 7 | 6 |
None of the men's matches concluded because of a rain delay except for the one between John Isner and Guido Pella. The majority of Monday's matches were cancelled for the day, per the event's official Twitter account (in Portuguese).
Pella deserves plenty of credit for notching the upset, especially since he had to fight through tiebreakers in both the first and third sets.
Elsewhere, the top two seeds, Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer, are looking to recover from disappointing Argentina Open showings that saw both players fail to reach the final, losing in the semifinals. Nadal in particular looked somewhat sluggish at times in his loss to eventual champion Dominic Thiem.
Nadal's struggles early in this season haven't gone unnoticed either.
"I still think Rafa's problems are much more complex and involves many more aspects of his game—physical, mental, emotional," former player Pam Shriver told ESPN.com. "We saw how much he struggled last year, and after a first-round exit in Australia, that belief is not back yet."
ESPN tennis analyst Peter Bodo added, "It's always sad to see a guy losing his mojo for no apparent reason, and that's exactly what's happened to the "King of Clay." He, too, has a Djokovic problem (everyone has a Djokovic problem), but he also has a Fabio Fognini problem and a Fernando Verdasco problem. All kinds of problems."
Rio is a chance for Nadal to begin turning his season around. That will make the men's draw in particular fascinating in Rio de Janeiro.
Women's Results
| Ana Bogdan | 6 | 6 | |
| Gabriela Ce | 2 | 3 | |
| (5) Polona Hercog | 6 | 6 | |
| Jennifer Brady | 4 | 2 | |
| Sachia Vickery | 3 | 7 | 4 |
| (3) Danka Kovinic | 6 | 5 | 6 |
| (8) Andreea Mitu | 2 | 2 | |
| Shelby Rogers | 6 | 6 | |
| Veronica Cepede Royg | 6 | 6 | 6 |
| Anna Tatishvili | 7 | 1 | 3 |
| Beatriz Haddad Maia | 2 | 1 | |
| Sorana Cirstea | 6 | 6 | |
| Francesca Schiavone | 6 | 6 | |
| (7) Tatjana Maria | 1 | 1 | |
| Mariana Duque Marino | 7 | 6 | 6 |
| Pauline Parmentier | 5 | 7 | 3 |
| (4) Christina McHale | 6 | 6 | 1 |
| Cindy Burger | 7 | 2 | 6 |
It didn't take long for one of the higher seeds to fall in Rio de Janeiro early on Monday, as No. 8 Andreea Mitu fell in straight sets to Shelby Rogers, 6-2, 6-2.
Rogers completely controlled the match with her serve, winning 85 percent of her first-serve points while converting five of the seven break points she created in the match. She also pounced on Mitu's second serve, winning 67 percent of those points to pull off the upset.
The top seed in early action, No. 3 Danka Kovinic, had to fend off an upset of her own against Sachia Vickery, needing all three sets to advance. The back-and-forth match featured six break points won for Kovinic and five for Vickery, as the two players wrestled control of the match back and forth.
No. 5 Polona Hercog had little issue getting past Jennifer Brady, meanwhile, winning in straight sets. Hercog hit three aces, was broken just once and won 60 percent of Brady's second-serve points.
Ana Bogdan cruised past Gabriela Ce with relative ease as well, winning five break points while being broken twice. Veronica Cepede Royg had to battle back after dropping the first set against Anna Tatishvili, smashing seven aces in victory.
Christina McHale was a player to watch in this draw because the No. 4 seed and American was once ranked as high as No. 24 in the world and is looking to climb her way back toward those heights. However, those hopes came to a crashing halt Monday with a three-set loss to Cindy Burger.
The top seeds and the favorites, No. 1 Teliana Pereira and No. 2 Johanna Larsson, have yet to commence their tournaments as well.
