The duo of Vavassori and Errani falling in the first round was a major result, given they were the reigning U.S. Open mixed doubles champions.

It also wasn't a great day for the top seeds. The No. 1 seed, Sabalenka and Djokovic, fell in the first round. So did the No. 2 seed (Fritz and Pegula) and No. 3 seed (Anisimova and Tien).

The No. 4 seed Bencic and Cobolli is now the favorites, especially after eliminating the iconic duo of Williams and Alcaraz in the quarterfinals.

"I don't know how I landed on this court to play Carlos and Serena," Bencic said after the match. "It was an honor to play."

Alcaraz, meanwhile, certainly had some rust to shake off after being out of action since April.

"I think everybody could see: I double-faulted on the first point," he said. "I was really, really nervous. I was out for four months... I almost forget how it feels."

Bencic and Cobolli will now face Svitolina and Monfils in the semifinals, while the other match will pit Muchova and Mensik against Andreeva and Rublev.
