Brandon Browner Released by Seahawks: Latest Comments and Reaction

Adam WellsAug 29, 2016

Brandon Browner's best years of his NFL career came with the Seattle Seahawks, yet he couldn't rekindle the spark he once had in his second stint with the team.

NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported Monday the Seahawks will cut Browner, and the News Tribune's Gregg Bell confirmed the veteran cornerback is on his way out.

The New Orleans Saints released the 32-year-old in March after he had finished the first season of a three-year deal he had signed with the team. Browner was coming off a disappointing 2015 campaign despite starting all 16 games for the first time since he was a rookie in 2011.

According to Pro Football Focus, Browner had the worst coverage grade of any NFL cornerback last season:

In addition to his overall struggles in coverage last year, Browner also hurt the Saints by becoming the most penalized player in a single season (24 flags, 21 accepted) in NFL history. He's an aggressive, physical cornerback, and those traits tend to get the better of him in the heat of battle.

Browner's stint with New Orleans did highlight his negative traits, but the Saints also put him in the position of having to carry a secondary. He had never done that before.

Signing with the Seahawks seemed to be the perfect move for Browner. He already had a rapport with many members of the secondary, and the Legion of Boom's overall strength could mask some of his deficiencies in pass coverage.

Instead, things didn't work out for Browner in Seattle. He played in the team's first three preseason games, making two combined tackles. The Seattle Times' Bob Condotta noted he had been playing with the third-string defense in Thursday's win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Given his age, it may be too early to write off Browner's future in the league, but he'll likely have to wait until he gets another shot. Teams are looking to trim down their rosters at this point rather than bring in new players.

Over the course of the regular season, with injuries potentially thinning out teams' secondaries, Browner might have a better chance of landing on his feet again.
