WWE Fastlane 2016: Matches Sure to Cause Controversy Among Fans

Brad JonesFeb 10, 2016

Fastlane 2016 is the last stop on the journey to Dallas for WrestleMania—and there could still be a few twists and turns before WWE reaches its destination.

The second edition of this relatively fresh pay-per-view looks to build on the same idea that was implemented in 2015. Its Triple Threat main event will decide conclusively who will compete in the main event at the Showcase of the Immortals, as Daniel Bryan versus Roman Reigns did last time around.

Here are the matches that are sure to prompt debates in the wake of Fastlane 2016.

Brie Bella vs. Charlotte

This week, discussion of the heartbreaking retirement of Bryan has dominated the world of wrestling. With her husband in the spotlight, WWE officials have seen fit to book Brie Bella as the next challenger for Charlotte's Divas Championship.

On the face of it, there's really nothing wrong with this decision. Sasha Banks made her intentions clear at the Royal Rumble, and seeing The Boss challenge for the title at WrestleMania would likely produce the best women's match that the event has seen in a long time.

However, WWE has been known to change plans suddenly when extenuating circumstances offer up an opportunity. Seeing Brie claim the title and celebrate with Bryan would perhaps be a feel-good moment on the night—but it could undo all the progress the division as a whole has made recently.

Bella is not the wrestler that Charlotte is, and she likely wouldn't be able to deliver a title match worthy of being on the WrestleMania card. All signs point toward the champion retaining at Fastlane, but there's sure to be controversy if she does not.

Chris Jericho vs. AJ Styles

There certainly seems to be a rivalry brewing between these two world warriors. We've seen them cross paths several times on WWE television, not to mention during the Royal Rumble, and all signs point toward a further clash at Fastlane.

AJ Styles already had a legion of fans when he signed with WWE, and many have proved to be fiercely defensive of The Phenomenal One. It's understandable why some would have their reservations, given the company's reputation with regard to outside hires, but it seems like any sign of weakness is a cause for controversy.

Whether it's a case of Styles not being given much time on the microphone, or JBL's frequent references to the "Redneck Rookie" on commentary, it's difficult to please the former IWGP champion's rabid fanbase. Anything but a convincing win over The Lionheart will likely cause more unrest among his supporters.

Brock Lesnar vs. Dean Ambrose vs. Roman Reigns

For months, it's seemed clear that Reigns was on his way to the main event of WrestleMania, but the past few weeks have raised some major questions. Between the dependable presence of Brock Lesnar and some spirited performances from Dean Ambrose, there's a sense of unpredictability in the air.

In a bout sure to prompt vocal debate, WWE's hand-picked successor to John Cena will face two competitors who are far more popular among certain sectors of the audience. Either man could come out on top and send those fans home happy—but all signs point to another major victory for Reigns.

To get to the main event of WrestleMania, Reigns will have to pin or submit either Lesnar or Ambrose. Given that The Beast has been so well-protected in recent years, and that The Lunatic Fringe is currently riding a wave of momentum, either option is sure to upset some.

The possibility of fans supporting Triple H over Reigns in the final build toward WrestleMania isn't a situation WWE would relish. However, if the main event of Fastlane plays out as expected, there will be some spirited discussion going on among fans in the wake of the pay-per-view.
