Recap
The first major upset rocked the Argentina Open on Tuesday, as No. 6 Fabio Fognini fell to Federico Delbonis. Delbonis' ability to win 70 percent of his first-serve points was a key factor in the match, as was his ability to convert five of the 10 break points he created.
The top seed in play, Dominic Thiem, needed three sets of his own to get past the tough Pablo Carreno Busta. He pounced on Carreno Busta's second serve, winning 50 percent of those points while converting four of his nine break-point chances.
No. 8 Pablo Cuevas had a bit less trouble with Albert Ramos-Vinolas, ripping off 10 aces and winning 85 percent of his first-serve points. No. 7 Alexandr Dolgopolov was less lucky, however, as Diego Schwartzman knocked him off in three sets in a match dominated by two strong servers (Schwartzman ripped 11 aces, while Dolgopolov had 15 in the loss).
Two of the top four seeds will kick off their Argentina Open tournaments on Tuesday, as No. 3 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will face Leonardo Mayer, while No. 4 John Isner takes on Dusan Lajovic.
Meanwhile, top seed Rafael Nadal had an opening-round bye but is trying to bounce back from a disappointing showing in Australia, as he told the ATP World Tour's official website on Tuesday:
"I didn’t like at all the defeat in Australia, but that I cannot solve. It was a bad tournament. [It] just did not work out despite having prepared very well. So I'm in Buenos Aires to give my best and try to make a better presentation. Every season is different, but with the same purpose to fight in every tournament and finish as high as possible in the ranking. I’m happy to return to Argentina, because every time I left this country I did it with a lot of positive energy. They treat me very well here, like few places in the world.
"
No. 2 David Ferrer is also on bye and set to commence his tournament on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Thiem—who has looked like the best player among the top seeds in action to this point—will face Gastao Elias on Wednesday, while Nicolas Almagro will take on Federico Delbonis to round out the day's action. The full schedule is available on the ATP World Tour's official website.
