Super Bowl 50: 10 Things We're Most Looking Forward to on Sunday
The conclusion of the NFL season should make for quite the ending in Super Bowl 50 with the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers.
Not only are they the two highest seeds in this year's postseason, two of top defenses in the NFL will take the field against two of the league best quarterbacks.
With Super Sunday just mere hours away, there are fans of the 30 other NFL teams (and those who simply don't care what the result is) who may look for other entertainment outside of a Cam Newton dance or a Peyton Manning audible that leads to a Broncos touchdown.
Never fear.
Here's a guide of 10 things that you should be wondering about and rooting for on Sunday night. (Rooting for good chips and dip at your local Super Bowl party isn't on the list, but it's a given.)
Cam Newton Giving a Football Away to a Little Panthers Fan and a Dance
1 of 10
If you don't think Newton is fun, you must dislike fun severely.
Newton's trademark after big plays (specifically touchdowns) has been to hand the ball to a youthful Panthers fan in the crowd and bust out an awesome dance of some kind.
Throughout his MVP-like season, Newton has caught a lot of flack from doubters and critics of his play on the field. He'll get a chance to silence them all with a great performance on Sunday, which could also lead to a great dance or two throughout the game.
And if he gives a ball away to a lucky boy or girl, then too bad they don't make Band-Aids for people offended by Newton for having fun and making a kid smile.
Newton will face the league's top defense in Denver, but the leader of the only offense to score 500 or more points in a single NFL season since the record-breaking 2013 Denver Broncos?
Yeah, that would be Newton.
As good as the Broncos are defensively, Newton has found ways to make plays and dance all season long.
Sunday probably won't change that.
Von Miller Going Toe-to-Toe with Cam Newton in the Dance Category
2 of 10
The second-best dancer on the field after big plays isn't Manning, although his dancing to the University of Tennessee's (Manning's alma mater) fight song, "Rocky Top," was funny in the past.
When Von Miller's head is focus on nothing but football, there's a legitimate case for him being the best defensive player in the NFL.
And speaking of second, take a guess as to who was the second overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft behind Newton?
If you guess Miller, pat yourself on the back.
Miller had a fantastic 2015-16 campaign with 11 sacks and contributed in making New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady miserable two weeks ago in the AFC Championship Game.
He's a force off the edge for Denver and is quite the showman himself after big plays (note: video contains profanity).
If there's anyone who can match Newton's flamboyance and energy, it's Miller.
But please, Von, keep it PG-13.
How About a Regular Coin Toss to Not Bring Any Controversy?
3 of 10To avoid any more issues that come the NFL's way on Sunday, how about they avoid creating chaos like in the overtime thriller between the Green Bay Packers and the Arizona Cardinals?
The coin had to be flipped twice because the first "flip" didn't actually flip.
Yeah, I know. It was fairly weird.
You know what else is weird? Clete Blakeman—the official in the video above—is the head official for Sunday's game.
Here's your chance at redemption for the opening coin toss, Clete!
Will Beyonce Knock out the Power Once Again?
4 of 10
Beyonce, you're the best woman ever, but please don't knock the power out again.
Along with Bruno Mars, who confirmed his appearance Friday, and Coldplay, Beyonce will be performing again during a Super Bowl halftime show.
If you forgot how things went the last time Beyonce was featured during a halftime show, here's a clip to refresh your memory.
During the second half of Super Bowl 47 in New Orleans, a 34-minute power outage occurred and delayed the game. The scene was reminiscent of when Bane took over Gotham City in The Dark Knight Rises.
So again I'll ask, please do not knock out the power again in the Super Bowl, Beyonce.
But also, light the world on fire with another awesome performance, Queen B.
Peyton Manning Puts on a Show in What Could Be His Final NFL Game
5 of 10
In Super Bowl 33, John Elway and the Denver Broncos crushed the Atlanta Falcons, 34-19, on their way to a second consecutive Super Bowl title.
That game also marked the end of Elway's legendary career, as he exited the game with back-to-back Super Bowl titles after chasing the ring for so many years.
Sunday night could mark the end of Manning's soon-to-be Hall of Fame career. Manning will arguably go down as the greatest quarterback of any generation, and sealing that legacy with one more ring would be a perfect goodbye for a player who has been one of the biggest stars in the NFL for almost 20 years.
This will be Manning's fourth Super Bowl appearance. He's lost the last two, which could be an even bigger sign that The Sheriff is loading the chamber for one last ride.
The ending couldn't be any better if Manning walks out of Santa Clara, California, with the Vince Lombardi Trophy after an outstanding performance to cap one of the greatest careers ever.
Witnessing the First Overtime Game in Super Bowl History
6 of 10
Sunday will mark the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl.
In the previous 49 games, we've seen it all: blowouts, costly turnovers, gutsy calls, game-winning field goals and so on.
One thing the Super Bowl has never given us is overtime.
An overtime thriller between the Broncos and the Panthers would be a perfect sendoff for the NFL this season. For some reason, this season has felt quite goofier and stranger than in years past, and an overtime game between the league's two best teams would be nothing short of perfect to end the 2015-16 season.
If we're being honest, Manning against Newton (with two of the best defenses in the NFL) for more than 60 minutes sounds like a blast.
Thomas Davis Stealing the Show with One Good Arm
7 of 10
Thomas Davis is the most insane human being on the planet, and he's awesome for it.
How so?
Davis broke his right forearm in Carolina's 49-15 rout of the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Championship Game and plans to play with a cast on his arm during Sunday's game, per the Panthers' official website.
Let me run that by you one more time: Davis is attempting to play in Sunday's game two weeks after breaking his arm.
For a guy who has had three ACL surgeries in his career, a broken arm must be nothing to him. Whether he plays five snaps or 50, it takes some serious guts to do what Davis is attempting to do.
Now watch him go out and win Super Bowl 50 MVP to further argue the point that this NFL season hasn't made any sense.
Super Sunday Means New Commericals Throughout the Night
8 of 10What would the Super Bowl be without fantastic commercials?
On Super Sunday, companies throughout the world throw millions of dollars around to show us their products throughout the evening.
Per Lindsay Kramer of Syracuse.com, one 30-second ad this year will run you around $5 million.
That's $166,666 per second.
If that's the bill, then we are in store for awesome ads (and potentially some fun new trailers for upcoming movies).
How Long Will Lady Gaga's Anthem Be?
9 of 10
It took four minutes, 39 seconds for the Seattle Seahawks to take a 5-0 lead on the Denver Broncos in one of the most lopsided NFL games in history two years ago in Super Bowl 48.
As for Sunday's National Anthem, it's not crazy to think that Lady Gaga's rendition of the National Anthem will take that long or even longer than that.
There's plenty of "prop bets" that surround the Super Bowl every year, and one of them is the length of Lady Gaga's National Anthem.
No, seriously.
I'd personally take the under of 4:39 with this one, but you never know.
It is the Super Bowl we're talking about here with one of the world's most popular performers.
Will Stephen Curry Manage to Drop 50 Again in Super Bowl 50?
10 of 10
Stephen Curry has lit the NBA world on fire again this season, as he and the Golden State Warriors continue their pace toward the second NBA team to win 70 or more games in a season.
Curry, a noted Panthers fan, will be in attendance for the big game on Sunday night.
The Warriors have a huge game themselves over Super Bowl weekend with Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night.
"It will be a good 48 hours, a win and a win," Curry said, per ESPN.com.
As for the final score of Super Bowl 50, Curry said he predicts a 24-17 victory.
"Hold me to it," he said.
With his beloved Panthers in nearby Santa Clara, Curry might look to put on a show on the hardwood on Saturday and catch a dime from Newton on Sunday. (OK, probably not.)
