Oklahoma guard Buddy Hield arguably has the inside track for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, awarded to the best player in the country, at this point in the season. He's averaging 25.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists, so the numbers are there. The fact the Sooners are the top-ranked team in the country will only strengthen his case.
ESPN.com's Royce Young is particularly impressed by Hield's selflessness on the court:
Providence guard Kris Dunn is also making a strong case. He's second on the Friars in scoring (17.0 PPG), third in rebounding (6.2 RPG) and first in assists (7.1 APG).
Brice Johnson's stock continues to rise, so he'll remain in the discussion all year. The North Carolina forward has averaged 20.3 points and 11.3 rebounds in the month of January.
Barring an injury to Ben Simmons, the race for the Wayman Tisdale Award race is a little more straightforward. The LSU forward is the most talented freshman in the country, and he could easily sweep every major award when all is said and done.
Only once this year has Simmons failed to score in double digits, and he has been a double-double machine, per ESPN Stats & Info:
Given how unpredictable this season has been in college basketball, it wouldn't be a surprise if another name emerges to become the front-runner for either the Oscar Robertson Trophy or the Wayman Tisdale Award.
With the business end of the regular season approaching, now is the time for the nation's biggest stars to make their cases for college basketball's top honors.
