Jordan Spieth Comments on Team USA's Mentality for 2016 Ryder Cup

Tim DanielsJan 20, 2016

Jordan Spieth is tired of seeing Team Europe dominate Team USA in the Ryder Cup, so the top-ranked American is placing an emphasis on reversing the trend, starting in September.

Steve Douglas of the Associated Press passed along comments from last year's Masters and U.S. Open champion about the biennial event, which Europe has won six of the past seven times. The 22-year-old superstar wants to lead a new era of American victories.

"We're tired of hearing about changes that need to be made. We're tired of hearing about the past," Spieth said. "And we're ready to believe in a younger, more hungry team going forward."

Spieth called this year's clash, which will be held at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota, a "clean slate" and said winning it was "possibly at the very top of the list" of things he hopes to accomplish during the 2016 campaign.

That's saying a lot, because not only is he looking to build off his two-major performance last year, but golf also returns to the Olympics this summer. He should arrive in Brazil as one of the top contenders to take home gold.

The Texas native is hoping a potential infusion of young —including himself and Patrick Reed, among others—can turn things around for the Americans. He also wants players to start thinking about the event well before they show up to the course in September.

"We are going to have to—all as team members—put a lot of thought into this ahead of time on how we want to prepare, so that when we get there, we know the teams, we can then play matches against each other," Spieth told the AP.

Europe cruised to victory in the event in 2014, scoring a 16.5 to 11.5 triumph. That followed consecutive victories by a single point. The last win by Team USA in 2008.

Spieth could be in for a huge year representing the United States if he can get possession of the Ryder Cup back while also medaling in the Olympics. He's seemingly ready for the challenge.
