With the win, the Badgers improve to 10-9 on the season, while the Spartans fall to 16-3.
This is the second straight loss for Michigan State after winning 16 of its first 17 games. Former Spartan star and current Denver Nuggets guard Gary Harris isn't concerned about the school's losing skid, though:
Wisconsin, meanwhile, snapped its own three-game losing streak. The Badgers have struggled ever since conference play began, with their lone Big Ten victory entering Sunday coming against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (6-12, 0-5 Big Ten) on Jan. 2.
The Spartans shot a healthy 47.5 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc. They also out-rebounded the Badgers 35-25.
Fouls were one area in which Wisconsin owned a decided advantage over its opponent. Michigan State picked up 28 personal fouls compared to 15 for the home team. That resulted in the Badgers getting to the free-throw line 20 more times.
Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo placed the blame for the loss squarely on himself and the rest of his team, per ESPN.com's Jesse Temple and Scout's Benjamin Worgull:
Happ stepped up big for his team. Not only did he score the decisive points in the win, but he also came two rebounds short of a double-double, finishing with 14 points and eight boards.
Junior guard Bronson Koenig was the game's leading scorer. He poured in 27 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including going 4-of-8 from three-point range. Koenig provided heroics of his own, as his three-pointer with 28 seconds left in the game brought Wisconsin to within a point. His assist also set up Happ for the game-winner.
Zack Miller of BadgerBlitz.com praised Koenig for his selflessness near the end:
The question for Wisconsin will be whether this victory is an aberration or a springboard for things to come. Yahoo Sports' Jeff Eisenberg argued any push to get to the Big Dance begins now:
The Badgers don't play a ranked team until Feb. 13, when they hit the road to take on the No. 3 Maryland Terrapins. If they can string a few wins together before that, then the NCAA tournament discussion could truly begin.
Michigan State will need to recover quickly from this defeat. The Spartans play Nebraska at home in their next game and then welcome in the Terps on Jan. 23.
