College Basketball's All-Week 10 First Team: Top Performers at Every Position

Jason FranchukJan 17, 2016

Week 10 of the college basketball season gave us a flurry of memorable performances from all around the country—including from somewhat unexpected teams.

Of course, we had to hit up the Iowa Hawkeyes, who jumped to the forefront of the Big Ten title talk after hammering Michigan State. Peter Jok caught our attention.

So did Jaron Blossomgame. Turns out the Clemson Tigers are more than a football school, especially this week.

So are the Alabama Crimson Tide, who stunned previously undefeated South Carolina and get a tip of the cap here.

That's what makes college basketball so great—big games can involve anyone. That's what we examine here.

Every week, we pick a first-teamer and second-teamer at all five positions and also a duo off the bench. Stat-stuffing games are seriously considered, but we also take a look at cumulative consistency against strong competition and those that have played above their season averages from last Sunday through Saturday night's games.

Surprise stories help make the ranks, too.

Let us know what you think of our picks and share your own in the comments.

Point Guard: Jack Gibbs, Davidson

1 of 6

Jan. 12 at Dayton: 31 points, 6 assists

Jan. 16 vs. UMass: 43 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists

Sure, winning matters. But not all players of the week happen to be so fortunate, and we're not about to rule out this midweek performance for going 1-1 (Davidson lost at Dayton).

Jack Gibbs scorched a pair of teams in shooting 21-of-49 and entered the weekend ranked No. 4 in the nation in scoring (24.4) after having reached 40 points three times this season. A three-pointer against UMass recovered the lead, too.

Second Team: Gary Payton II, Oregon State

Jan. 13 at Colorado: 26 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists

The same goes for our No. 2 point guard this week. We're not going to penalize him for trying. We had to include Gary Payton, whose team's schedule doesn't easily fit into our Sunday-to-Saturday qualification. He had 11 rebounds last Saturday (along with 20 points) in a win against Cal. The Beavers don't play again until Sunday night, so we acknowledged him here because the 6'3" senior continues to lead his team in points, assists, steals and rebounds.

Shooting Guard: Peter Jok, Iowa

2 of 6

Jan. 14 at Michigan State: 23 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist

We try to spread the love, rarely allowing more than one player from a team to be mentioned in our weekly selection of 12 players. So we'll take Peter Jok, who scorched the Spartans Thursday over 31 minutes in a blowout win in East Lansing. He made 3-of-5 three-pointers, brimming with confidence, which is dripping from the Hawkeyes these days.

The 6'6" junior made the most of a nine-day layoff, scoring 19 points in the first half, when Iowa hit nine threes.

Second Team: Jawun Evans, Oklahoma State

Jan. 13 vs. Oklahoma: 42 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists

Jan. 16 at Texas: 12 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists

A win against Texas would've really helped Jawun Evans' case this week after he put up Buddy Hield-like numbers in a loss to the Sooners. But he still deserves some commendation.

Small Forward (Wing): Riley Norris, Alabama

3 of 6

Jan. 13 vs. South Carolina: 27 points, 7 rebounds

Jan. 16 at Vanderbilt: 6 points, 2 rebounds

Get a coach his first league win and knock off one of the two remaining undefeated teams? That's what Riley Norris accomplished when he sank eight three-pointers against the Gamecocks. Was he a one-hit wonder or is there something behind his stellar night in which he matched his career high of 18 points by halftime and nailed three times his season scoring average?

Both sides of this coin are possible after a dud performance (and a loss) against Vanderbilt, but rising to the occasion against the Gamecocks gets some benefit of the doubt.

Second Team: Bonzie Colson, Notre Dame

Jan. 13 vs. Georgia Tech: 8 points, 4 rebounds

Jan. 16 at Duke:  31 points, 11 rebounds

Bonzie Colson scored a career-high 31 points to lead the Irish to a nice upset of No. 9 Duke, 95-91, on Saturday. According to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com), Colson has scored 17 or more points four times in his career—twice against Duke. That's a good time to bring it.

Power Forward: Jaron Blossomgame, Clemson

4 of 6

Jan. 13 vs. Duke: 17 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists

Jan. 16 vs. Miami: 25 points, 7 rebounds

There might be no hotter team in the country right now than Clemson, who is coming off three consecutive wins—all against Top 20 teams. And the 6'7" junior is a big reason why. Jaron Blossomgame played all but three minutes against Miami and Duke and made nearly half of his shots (13-of-27) and half of his six three-point attempts.

The 75 percent free-throw shooter even made all 13 of his free throws. Maybe Dabo Swinney should throw him a pizza party.

Second Team: Kennedy Meeks, North Carolina

Jan. 16 vs. North Carolina State: 23 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks

Kennedy Meeks missed seven games with a knee injury earlier this year. In his second game back, after playing sparingly at Syracuse last Saturday, he saw 30 minutes and offered more than enough help to make the Tar Heels look like a title contender again.

Center: Thomas Bryant, Indiana

5 of 6

Jan. 10 vs. Ohio State: 18 points, 13 rebounds

Jan. 16 at Minnesota: 10 points, 7 rebounds

It's starting to look like the highly recruited freshman is going to give Hoosiers fans and all of the pundits what they were expecting. 6'10" Thomas Bryant turned in a tidy week in which he made 12 of his 18 shot attempts. If he can limit his turnovers (seven last week), watch out.

Actually, watch out now because IU has won 10 straight, with Bryant's development and efficiency playing a significant role.

Second Team: Chris Boucher, Oregon

Jan. 10 vs. Stanford: 9 points, 5 rebounds, 5 blocks

Jan. 14 at Utah: 6 points, 4 rebounds, 6 blocks

The 6'10" forward only scored three more points last week than he averages per game for the season (15 to 12). But take a look at those blocked-shot totals. That includes going to Utah star Jakob Poeltl's home court and winning that matchup and the game.

Off the Bench: Chimezie Metu, USC

6 of 6

Jan. 13 at UCLA: 21 points, 8 rebounds

All of the talk about USC's resurgence deserves some merit. Congrats to Chimezie Metu, a 6'11" freshman who hammered the crosstown rival by knocking down all but two of his 10 shots in his career-best game. It was USC's first win at Pauley Pavilion in three years.

"It was really because of him we got out to a big lead," teammate Jordan McLaughlin said, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com). "He got a couple of buckets back-to-back, and he was getting rebounds and blocks on defense and we were able to run because of that."

Second Team: James Farr, Xavier

Jan. 12 vs DePaul: 4 points, 5 rebounds

Jan. 16 at Marquette: 16 points, 19 rebounds

The 6'10" senior stole the show in a road win at Marquette, needing just 29 minutes to record a massive double-double. The rebounding number was a career high, and it was a timely one against a solid Big East contingent.
