Edelman Undergoes Surgery
Wednesday, May 11
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the news. It's not clear when the surgery took place, but Schefter described it as a "cleanup procedure."
Edelman suffered a broken foot in Week 10 against the New York Giants and proceeded to miss his team’s final seven regular-season games. New England lost four of those contests after starting the campaign 9-0 with him lining up at receiver.
Edelman finished with 692 receiving yards and seven touchdowns during those nine games. He returned for the postseason, compiling 17 receptions for 153 yards in the Patriots' two games. The last time he played a full 16 contests was 2013, when he tallied 1,056 receiving yards and six touchdown catches.
Doug Kyed of NESN.com broke down just how much Tom Brady and Company missed Edelman during his absence:
"The Patriots’ completion percentage drops nearly 10 points, their passer rating drops nine points, Brady is sacked at a higher rate and their average yards per play drops by 2.7 yards.
Perhaps what’s most glaring is how poorly the Patriots have performed on third down without Edelman. The Patriots’ third-down conversion rate dropped by 16.1 percent.
Brady had a 113.5 passer rating while targeting Edelman, completing 71.8 percent of his passes for 692 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions.
"
Edelman makes defenders miss in the open field from the slot, and his ability to get open within seconds of the snap is critical in New England’s quick-hitting aerial attack. He often thrives in single coverage because opposing defenses shift so much attention toward Rob Gronkowski, and he serves as a security blanket for Brady on critical third downs.
For now, the prognosis is fine. If Edelman is back on the field for camp, this won't be a problem. But foot problems are notoriously fickle, and a re-injury could put the Patriots offense in a bind.
