Wednesday Recap

Tomic's was a dominant display in his first match of the tournament as he saw off Thompson in less than 50 minutes.

The top seed came out of the blocks fast, not giving up a single break-point opportunity on his own serve while claiming two breaks of his own in each set to ease to victory.

He will now face Teymuraz Gabashvili in the third round after the Russian impressed in his two-set second-round victory over Federico Delbonis.

Meanwhile, Halep was made to work hard to book her last-four spot in the women's draw, but she prevailed in two sets over fifth-seeded Pliskova, per WTA:

Neither player was particularly successful on serve as there were eight breaks in the match, but the Romanian claimed the vital edge when it mattered most in both sets.

Eighth seed Bencic had a topsy-turvy time of it in her quarter-final as she was forced into a decider despite having thrashed Makarova 6-0 in the opening set.

The pair exchanged breaks early on in the final set to engineer a tense finish, and Bencic claimed the key advantage late on to prevail in just shy of two hours.

Australia's Sam Stosur was knocked out by Puig after a lacklustre display from the 31-year-old. However, Stosur credited the Puerto Rican with an excellent performance after their two-set match, per Apia International:

Nicolas Mahut knocked out fifth seed Andreas Seppi in their men's second-round clash, with the Frenchman prevailing after 90 minutes of intense action.

Seppi responded well to going a set down to win the second 6-1, but Mahut composed himself and claimed the vital break in the final set to advance.

He will now face third seed Viktor Troicki in the last eight following the defending champion's two-set win over Tommy Roberdo.

Per Apia International, Muller advanced at a set up and 2-2 in the second against Thiem after the Austrian retired because of a foot blister.

Sixth seed Jeremy Chardy will face the Luxembourg player in the quarters after his victory over Sydney-born James Duckworth, while Dimitrov's win saw him advance to face Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov.
