NFL Rumors: Latest Gossip Surrounding 2016 Head Coaching Vacancies

Steve SilvermanJan 7, 2016

Adam Gase is still employed as the offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears.

However, it doesn't look like that will be the case for much longer. Gase appears to be the hot name on the coaching market as NFL teams in Philadelphia, Miami, Cleveland, San Francisco, Tennessee, New York and Tampa Bay prepare to fill head-coaching vacancies.

Gase has already been interviewed by the Eagles, Dolphins and Browns, and he is scheduled to speak with the Giants Friday, according to Fox Sports' Peter Schrager. Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com reported that it could come down to which team makes the first significant offer to hire Gase because so many teams are interested.

Miami has reportedly been interested in Gase for a long time, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. The Dolphins fired head coach Joe Philbin early in the season, and it quickly became clear that interim head coach Dan Campbell was just keeping the seat warm for a permanent head coach.

Gase has gained a lot of credibility in recent years. Prior to 2015, he worked with John Fox in Denver, perfecting the game plan for Peyton Manning. The common perception was that it was Manning's show and he designed the offense, but it was actually Gase who shifted the Denver offense to a more running-based attack in 2014.

Gase remained with Fox when he was hired by the Chicago Bears last year. The Bears had been having huge problems with Jay Cutler at quarterback, and his tendency to turn the ball over was one of the primary reasons the Bears became a losing team.

While Chicago was only able to manage a 6-10 record this year, they beat teams like Kansas City and Green Bay on the road and got a much better performance from Cutler. As a result, the thoughtful and perceptive Gase has become a high-level candidate for head coaching openings around the league.

The Eagles know that Gase is a popular choice, and they are also interested in Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, according to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post.

McAdoo may also be a candidate for the Giants' head coaching position, according to Shorr-Parks.

The Eagles have also interviewed Duce Staley and Pat Shurmur, both of whom were on Chip Kelly's staff in Philadelphia.

Josh McDaniels

ESPN's John Clayton (via SB Nation's Jimmy Morris) told Nashville radio station 102.5 The Game that New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is interested in the Titans' head coaching opening.

Clayton surmises that one of the key reasons for McDaniels' interest is the presence of quarterback Marcus Mariota, who will be going into his second season next year. Mariota was the No. 2 pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

There are no corresponding reports known at this time that the Titans are interested in McDaniels, but the Patriots offensive coordinator has helped the team build one of the more dynamic offenses in the league in recent season.

McDaniels previously coached the Denver Broncos in 2009 and 2010, and while that didn't work out, he could be ready for another head coaching opportunity at this point.

On the West Coast, the San Francisco 49ers have an interest in Anthony Lynn, who was an assistant head coach and running backs coach with the Buffalo Bills this year, per Schrager.

The 49ers have also shown some interest in former Denver and Washington head coach Mike Shanahan. According to ESPN's Dianna Marie Russini, the Niners and Shanahan have talked about the position over the phone, but a face-to-face meeting has been put on hold.
