Biggest Takeaways from Oakland Raiders' Week 15 Loss

Moe MotonDec 21, 2015

The Oakland Raiders’ 30-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers pulls some intriguing takeaways to the forefront for the immediate and distant future.

With the postseason out of reach, management can begin evaluating talent and pondering personnel decisions.

Short-term changes with the future in mind could take effect as early as Thursday night against the San Diego Chargers.

Roster attrition may present an audition opportunity for a veteran player on an expiring contract.

A mid-round pick could unexpectedly ascend to the starting lineup after an impressive showing over the past few outings.

An upbeat postgame interview offered a glimpse into a veteran’s thought process as he approaches a career decision.

Quarterback Derek Carr displayed another skill set that could become a permanent threat to opposing defenses going forward.

Finally, who’s responsible for surrendering an easy walk-in touchdown to Packers wideout James Jones? Why would this blown assignment bring about change within the secondary?

We’ll delve into the biggest takeaways stemming from Oakland’s loss to Green Bay.

T.J. Carrie Confused on Packers’ Final Touchdown?

1 of 5

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers tossed a simple pitch-and-catch touchdown pass to Jones, who streaked down the sideline for a 30-yard score in the third quarter—that touchdown essentially sealed the Raiders’ fate.

Green Bay regained the lead 24-20, and the Raiders failed to answer the score. What caused the busted coverage?

According to San Francisco Chronicle writer Vic Tafur, safety T.J. Carrie missed a deep safety assignment.

Carrie has toggled between cornerback and safety throughout the season. It’s possible wearing multiple hats caused confusion for the Raiders’ talented defensive back on a bad day.

Typically, Carrie plays deep safety in Nate Allen’s absence. Rodgers expedited the play-calling process in hurry-up mode, which caused disorder among Raiders defensive backs.

On Sunday, Carrie struggled in coverage, committing two penalties for 45 yards. The coaching staff may consider dialing back on his workload to avoid confusion against fast-paced offenses.

Derek Carr on the Run?

2 of 5

During Thursday's press conference with local reporters, offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave answered questions that drew comparisons between his quarterback Carr and Rodgers.

Musgrave revealed his intentions to encourage more quarterback scrambles in the absence of receiving options.

On cue, Carr put forth his best performance as a ball-carrier. He logged four carries for 42 yards as a legitimate running threat.

Typically, Rodgers finds ways to escape the pocket and move the chains. In Sunday’s matchup, Carr took the upper hand as a dual-threat quarterback.

The second-year quarterback continues to test his limitations and develop his game. The extra attention to Carr as a ball-carrier could create space for receivers out of the backfield and tight ends across the middle.

Rod Streater’s Small Window of Opportunity?

3 of 5

Wide receiver Seth Roberts couldn’t return to action due to an abdominal injury, per SilverandBlackPride.com writer Levi Damien.

Thus far, no one has commented on Roberts’ injury as minor or major. However, the Raiders take the field on Thursday night against the Chargers on short rest.

The Raiders have kept four wideouts active after Week 1. If Roberts remains sidelined, Rod Streater could finally see action since taking 10 snaps in the season opener, per Pro Football Focus.

This small window of opportunity could serve as Streater’s last audition before hitting the free-agent market in the offseason.

Starting Inside Linebacker for the Future?

4 of 5

Rookie Ben Heeney continues to see more snaps than veteran Curtis Lofton at inside linebacker.

Lofton arrived with expectations of becoming the unquestioned centerpiece of the Raiders' revamped defense. However, he’s experienced difficulties staying on the field as a liability in pass coverage.

Previously, the eight-year pro lost snaps to rookie linebacker Neiron Ball, who’s currently on injured reserve with a knee injury.

The Raiders front-loaded Lofton’s contract with guarantees, so he’s not owed a dime in dead cap after this season, per spotrac.com.

It’s not a forgone conclusion, but Oakland could promote Heeney to starter or look to draft a top prospect in the offseason.

One More Season for Charles Woodson?

5 of 5

Typically, NFL players retire when they lose the ability or desire to go through a grueling season. Safety Charles Woodson continues to make plays and expressed a personal joy in playing the game in a postgame interview with local reporters.

"Regardless of playoffs or what not, the game is still fun," said Woodson. "It's still great to be out there on the field."

Woodson has played 18 NFL seasons, won a Super Bowl, but still finds joy in taking the field with a young 6-8 Raiders team still finding ways to win games.

He's certainly good enough to stick around for another year as a solid component to the Raiders pass defense. Based on his sentiments, Oakland may see Woodson in silver and black for another season at age 40.
