Miles Austin Cut by Eagles: Latest Comments and Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldDec 7, 2015

The Philadelphia Eagles cut ties with veteran wide receiver Miles Austin on Monday.

Fox 29's Howard Eskin originally reported the news, and the Eagles went on to confirm the move.

On Wednesday, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Miles wasn't claimed after being placed on waivers and is now a free agent.

Austin had 13 receptions on 31 targets for 224 yards and a touchdown this season. The 31-year-old struggled to carve out a role in a receiving corps largely bereft of top-tier playmakers, which doesn't bode well for his NFL future.

Philadelphia hasn't gotten much of a return on rookie first-round pick Nelson Agholor, and Jordan Matthews has struggled with drops in his second year as a pro.

Despite those growing pains from the younger players, Eagles coach Chip Kelly didn't see enough from the more experienced Austin to merit extended playing time. He didn't dress for Philadelphia's Week 13 win over the New England Patriots.

ESPN's Louis Riddick approved of Kelly's transaction:

Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford hasn't been done many favors with his supporting cast. It stands to reason Philadelphia will prioritize upgrading its caliber of skill players in the passing game this offseason.

Austin was meant to address that area but ultimately didn't and was cut even before his one-year contract expired.
