Cam Newton, Ted Ginn Jr., Jerricho Cotchery Post-Week 13 Fantasy Advice

Matt FitzgeraldDec 6, 2015

If there were any doubts about whether to deploy Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in fantasy football, Sunday's Week 13 performance against the New Orleans Saints had to extinguish them.

Working with a pedestrian group of receivers, Newton tossed for five touchdowns in a 41-38 victory to preserve the Panthers' perfect record. He hit Ted Ginn Jr. and Jerricho Cotchery respectively with his final two scoring passes.

Read on for a more extended breakdown and individual advice on Newton, Ginn and Cotchery, along with their final Week 13 stat lines.

Cam Newton

The high completion percentage is perhaps what's most impressive about Newton's performance. He had receivers dropping key passes all afternoon but didn't shy away from trying them time and again.

Newton has perhaps the strongest arm in the NFL and can eschew fundamentals and footwork because of it. Although this leads to missing some easy throws, the strapping signal-caller is continuing to improve his overall consistency and ball placement.

Already a No. 1 fantasy QB in any format, it's going to be scary as Newton continues to grow and develop a greater rapport with current rookie Devin Funchess. Regardless of the opponent, Newton should be a fantasy fixture every single week.

Ted Ginn Jr.

Butterfingers doesn't even begin to describe Ginn. His elite speed makes him a lethal deep threat in theory; his stone hands mitigate how dangerous he ultimately is.

Still, Ginn did redeem himself for dropping two sure TDs by hauling in two as well, including a beautiful deep ball from Newton in the fourth quarter. He doesn't make the most of his opportunities, but Ginn is worth a flier against leaky secondaries such like the Saints.

Against tougher defenses, expect Carolina to lean on the run more and only take occasional deep shots with Ginn because of how unreliable his hands are. In six of 12 games, the speedster has had two or fewer receptions, so he can't be counted on as a boom-or-bust flex or WR3 play in any fantasy format.

Jerricho Cotchery

The more sure-handed Cotchery lacks the explosiveness Ginn boasts to be a steady fantasy producer. Newton turns to Cotchery in key moments but can't count on him for downfield throws.

Little more than WR2 or WR3 production can be expected from the 33-year-old veteran. Tight end Greg Olsen is the only elite weapon Newton has—and he wisely exploits the matchup problems the Pro Bowl pass-catcher presents.

Since there is no distinct top option in Carolina's receiving corps, the Atlanta Falcons promise to be a tough test in Week 14.

Top-flight cornerback Desmond Trufant will essentially take away half of the field on his own, which is good news for fantasy owners who have Newton, Olsen and Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart. That does not bode well for anyone counting on Ginn and Cotchery to post even decent numbers.
