Daily Fantasy Football December 6: DFS Stock Up, Stock Down

Andrew GouldDec 6, 2015

More than any other sport, an NFL player's fantasy value rests at the mercy of his teammates.

Without skilled rushers and receivers, a quarterback will fizzle out. Without a capable quarterback and a stable source of targets, a pass-catcher will rot away.

Fantasy football is also often a zero-sum game for teammates. A superstar operating as his squad's only true playmaker is flourishing with the ball constantly aimed his way. As a young wide receiver falls from grace elsewhere, an experienced tight end is picking up the slack.

Before locking in Week 13's DraftKings lineups, take a look at the last-minute fantasy stock report.

Stock Up

Matt Hasselbeck, QB, Indianapolis Colts ($5,300)

For the first time since starting in place of Andrew Luck, Matt Hasselbeck looked like more than a game manager last weekend.

Game manager is a compliment when applied to a 40-year-old quarterback who hasn't started more than eight games in a season since 2011. Hasselbeck has averaged a timid 6.82 yards per pass attempt, but he has also completed 64.7 percent of his passes in four Indianapolis Colts victories.

During Week 12's 25-12 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he exceeded 300 yards for the first time since Nov. 21, 2011. He established a rapport with top receivers T.Y. Hilton and Donte Moncrief, who combined for 209 of his 315 yards.

The strong showing earned him Pro Football Focus' fifth-best Week 12 quarterback grade, as noted by its Twitter page:

It also gave him a season-high 23.3 DraftKings points, his first outing above 17. He'll get a great opportunity at an encore against the Pittsburgh Steelers, who rank No. 30 in passing defense and No. 29 in DraftKings points allowed to quarterbacks.

If the Steelers secondary can turn Doug Baldwin into Jerry Rice, Hilton and Moncrief should enjoy big games. Like the Colts, DFS players wouldn't need the world from Hasselbeck at $5,300. He simply needs to do his part to lead a talented supporting cast to victory.

Odell Beckham Jr., WR, New York Giants ($8,900)

The New York Jets need Darrelle Revis more than ever for Sunday's Meadowlands matchup with the New York Giants, but they won't have him. On Friday, head coach Todd Bowles confirmed, per the team's official Twitter page, that the star cornerback will miss his second straight game due to a concussion:

After witnessing his struggles against DeAndre Hopkins, Revis' presence wouldn't have compelled any sensible seasonal owners to bench Odell Beckham Jr. He would have, however, steered daily players away from the high-priced ($8,900) wideout.

With Revis leaving a banged-up Jets secondary behind, Beckham is a strong play to continue his one-man show for the Giants. The second-year stud has rattled off four straight 100-yard outings, recording five touchdowns on 56 targets.

Last weekend, Jarvis Landry spurred the Jets for 13 catches, 165 yards and a touchdown sans Revis. Although mostly through garbage time and needing 58 passes, Ryan Tannehill amassed 351 passing yards and three scores. Devoid of any run game, Eli Manning averaged 44 pass attempts per game in November.

Win or lose, Manning will spend the afternoon chucking footballs in Beckham's general vicinity. He'll turn at least one into a big play.

Kyle Rudolph, TE, Minnesota Vikings ($3,700)

From Weeks 3-10, Kyle Rudolph collected a minuscule 13 receptions for 99 yards, never once exceeding two catches in any of those seven games. Over the past two weeks, he has grabbed 13 passes for 159 yards and a score.

Why the sudden change? For starters, the Minnesota Vikings are getting nothing out of their wideouts. Despite disappearing for most of the season, Rudolph still has more receptions (36), targets (55) and yards (341) than any receiver other than Stefon Diggs. Keep reading below for a deeper dive into Diggs' vanishing act, which has drawn new attention to the tight end.

With Adrian Peterson in their backfield, the Vikings aren't huge fans of throwing the football. They have attempted the second-fewest passes (326) this season, one above their Week 13 opponents. The Seattle Seahawks, who yield 3.8 yards per carry, will make sure Minnesota doesn't fall to last.

Not only will the 8-3 Vikings need to throw more usual, they'll want to look Rudolph's way to exploit their opponent's weakness. According to NFL.com, the Seahawks have surrendered 750 yards and seven touchdowns to tight ends, which explains their No. 29 DraftKings ranking against the position.

His role in a run-heavy offense doesn't afford him a bright future, but Rudolph should guide Minnesota's offense this afternoon.

Stock Down

T.J. Yeldon, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars ($4,800)

Week 12 was T.J. Yeldon's chance to shine. For a rare treat, the Jacksonville Jaguars were home favorites against the San Diego Chargers, who have relinquished 4.9 yards per carry and the second-most DraftKings points to opposing running backs.

The rookie responded with 82 yards, recording his fewest touches (13) since Week 3. He failed to reach the end zone for the fourth straight game, giving him an underwhelming average of 12.1 fantasy points per November game:

10@ BAL186156011.7
11TEN1454328011.2
12SD936446012.2

Touchdowns are hard to predict, but they're impossible to amass when not given the opportunity. According to ESPN.com's Mike DiRocco, Yeldon has received eight red-zone touches in Jacksonville's past 51 snaps. He didn't get a single goal-line handoff against San Diego, which Jaguars head coached Gus Bradley discussed with DiRocco.

"I know there were opportunities," Bradley said. "We had some run-pass options. Blake [Bortles] chose to check out of it to get to some other things based on the look they had. There were a couple times [plays for Yeldon] were called, but to look into more opportunities for him, I can't argue that fact."

After helplessly watching an ideal matchup pass him by, Yeldon now gets the Tennessee Titans, who have submitted the fewest DraftKings points to running backs. In Week 11, he managed 82 yards on 17 touches, a tame tally which isn't enough to justify a $4,800 price tag. Especially not when C.J. Anderson ($3,500) and David Johnson ($3,400) are far cheaper.

Stefon Diggs, WR, Minnesota Vikings ($4,700)

Remember when Stefon Diggs spent a month as DraftKings' biggest bargain? How about when Mike Wallace compared (per the Star Tribune) his burgeoning teammate to Antonio Brown? It was fun while it lasted.

Following a meteoric rise to stardom, Diggs' past four games have resembled Mad Men's opening credits. After averaging 10 targets and 104.8 per game over the first four bouts, he has since registered averages of 46.3 yards and 5.0 targets:

TAR4020
REC YD419185
TD20
DK PPG*21.58.6

The Seahawks has displayed some vulnerability recently, orchestrating monster outings for Michael Floyd and Markus Wheaton. But Minnesota's No. 31 passing defense isn't the Arizona Cardinals or Pittsburgh Steelers, and Diggs will likely have to deal with Richard Sherman throughout the afternoon.

This matchup is perfectly tailored for Diggs to keep losing looks to Rudolph, making him no more than a risky tournament flier.
