Richmond vs. California: Score, Highlights, Reaction from Las Vegas Invitational

Mike NorrisNov 27, 2015

The No. 14 California Golden Bears were upset by the Richmond Spiders on Friday, 94-90, in the Las Vegas Invitational at Orleans Arena. Richmond's official Twitter account provided an image of the team after the victory:

ShawnDre' Jones made the play of the night for the Spiders on the heels of a 22-8 run by the Bears, nailing a three-pointer at the one-minute, 26-second mark to give Richmond an 82-81 lead it would not relinquish.

He connected on three shots from behind the arc and impressed Matt Trabold of 13 WHAM Sports in Rochester, New York:

Jones provided the dagger, but Terry Allen was the star for Richmond. He had a career-high 34 points while nailing 17 of 21 free-throw attempts and kept the upset vibe going, per Campus Insiders:

While Allen worked hard in the post, Marshall Wood had the hot hand early in the second half for Richmond, finishing with 18 points. He was on fire from behind the arc during a 12-1 run that gave Richmond a 62-48 lead at the 15:41 mark.

Marc Davis of Richmond's WWBT NBC12 noted how hot Wood was while accounting for all of the Spiders' points during the run:

The Bears have now lost two in a row, but it was not for a lack of effort. Freshman Jaylen Brown had a career- and team-high 27 points, including this monster dunk early in the first half, which Rob Dauster of NBC Sports shared:

Fox Sports 1 broadcaster Justin Kutcher, who called the game, was impressed, to say the least:

Cal had the impressive dunks, but Richmond was hot from behind the three-point line, nailing nine of 18 attempts, while the Bears connected on just six of 15.

It looked as though Cal was going to sneak out with a victory after a 16-2 run gave the Bears a 75-73 lead around the 5:40 mark of the second half. They ran the lead to four points before a layup and Jones' three propelled the Spiders.

The 6'8", 240-pound Allen paced the Spiders all night. He added 13 rebounds, two assists and two blocks to go with his game-high 34 points.

Aside from Brown, Cal had four others in double figures. Tyrone Wallace chipped in with 15 points, while prized freshman Ivan Rabb had 13 points and seven rebounds.

While both teams are now 4-2, it was a disappointing loss for the ranked Bears and a win that could build confidence for a Spiders team that is hoping to reach the NCAA tournament.

Postgame Reaction

Allen talked about the team effort Richmond used to pull off the upset, per the Associated Press (via ESPN.com):

"

We just really tried to play together and find the open players and I think we did a good job of getting good looks and taking the right shots. Me personally, I just tried to block everything out around me—they're not at home and we're not at home, this is a neutral court—and knock down my shots.

"

Allen's head coach Chris Mooney praised his big man, per ESPN.com:

"He's so versatile, and tonight I thought he had some plays where it looked like he just snatched the rebound and put it back up for us. He was just tremendous. With all the talent out there, I think he was the best player on the court tonight."

The Bears had high expectations this season, coming in at No. 14 in the Associated Press Preseason Top 25 Poll, with head coach Cuonzo Martin in his second season after coming over from the Tennessee Volunteers.

After victories against four lesser teams, they've dropped two against San Diego State, and now Richmond. Clay Travis of FS1 was not too kind to Martin after the loss:

There are still plenty of opportunities for Cal to pick up a signature victory with five ranked teams on its schedule. The biggest test could be Dec. 22 when the Bears travel east to take on the No. 12 Virginia Cavaliers.

This was a tough loss, but it happens in college basketball. The Bears are full of talent with the freshman duo of Brown and Rabb, and should still make a run for the Pac-12 regular season championship.
