Quinton Coples to Dolphins: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Mike ChiariNov 24, 2015

It didn't take Quinton Coples long to catch on with a new team, as the 2012 first-round pick was claimed by the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday after getting waived by the New York Jets on Monday, according to the Dolphins.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network first reported the news. On Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reported the Bills also made a move to claim Coples, which would have reunited him with head coach Rex Ryan.

The Jets cut ties with the former North Carolina standout following their Week 11 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday, and while he had clearly fallen out of favor in New York, it was still a somewhat surprising move, considering what the Jets had invested in him.

Coples was widely regarded as a steal when New York nabbed him with the No. 16 overall pick in 2012, and he was a fairly significant contributor in his first three seasons with a total of 16.5 sacks, including 6.5 in 2014. Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News highlighted a connection for Coples:

The 6'6", 290-pound athlete started a total of 28 games between 2013 and 2014, and he displayed a great deal of versatility by playing both linebacker and defensive lineman in the Jets' 3-4 alignment.

Even so, Coples simply didn't jibe with the type of defense head coach Todd Bowles likes to play, according to Rapoport:

Despite showing the ability to rush the passer and drop into coverage as an outside linebacker and defensive end, Bowles made it clear following Coples' release that he viewed him as a tackle more so than a perimeter player, per Brian Costello of the New York Post:

"

I think he was a better inside player than he was an outside player, but we've got a slew of guys inside, including drafting Leonard [Williams] in the first round. As an outside player, I thought he was OK, but we needed a little more speed on the field for the things we're trying to do. He just caught up in that tweener status for us. That doesn't mean he still can't play. He just wasn't a fit for us because of the depth we had inside.

"

Coples may not have been Bowles' ideal player, but as a former first-rounder who has enjoyed some success at the NFL level, it is still too early to label him a bust.

He was in a difficult position with the Jets since the regime change resulted in him being moved around often positionally. He was never able to settle in and get comfortable, which is a big reason why his 2015 season has been so disastrous thus far.

A change of scenery may be precisely what Coples needs in order to reignite the flame and get back to being the type of player he was last season.

Regardless of Bowles' comments on the release, it is safe to assume that Coples will have a chip on his shoulder after essentially being told he wasn't among the top 53 players on the Jets' roster.

If he is able to harness that and get back to being utilized correctly, then Coples could prove to be a massive steal on the free-agent market.
