Aqib Talib Suspended: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Joseph ZuckerNov 9, 2015

The NFL announced Monday it suspended Denver Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib one game for his eye poke of Indianapolis Colts tight end Dwayne Allen, per Field Yates of ESPN.com. Mike Klis of 9 News in Denver reported Talib lost his appeal and will serve his suspension when the Broncos play the Kansas City Chiefs.

“We’re all disappointed as a team that it was not reduced," John Elway said.

The incident came in the fourth quarter of the Colts' 27-24 victory Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium. Allen was locked in an argument with Broncos linebacker Von Miller. Then, Talib entered the fray and poked Allen in the eye, leading to a critical personal-foul penalty. The eye poke can be seen at the 2:34 mark:

After the announcement of his suspension, Talib told reporters he apologized to his teammates for his actions.

"They're entitled to discipline me," Talib said. "I deserve discipline."

Talib later said, "My emotions got the best of me. I was a little heated. ... That's what I regret."

Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak believes Talib's gouge was unintentional but added the Pro Bowl defender "needs to stay out of the situation," per Troy Renck of the Denver Post.

Talib also told reporters Kubiak told him he's "gotta be smarter than that."

Pro Football Talk's Zac Jackson questioned what exactly Talib was hoping to accomplish by approaching Allen in the first place if it wasn't to physically provoke the tight end:

Deadspin's Drew Magary offered an alternative punishment if Talib is upset with the suspension:

ESPN's Chris Mortensen noted that a one-game suspension for Talib would mean a forfeiture of his $294,117.65 game check.

Should Talib miss the Broncos' Week 10 clash against the Kansas City Chiefs at Mile High Stadium, Denver could be looking at a second straight defeat after beginning the season 7-0. The Broncos beat the Chiefs by just seven points when the two teams met earlier in the year, and the victory only came after Denver scored two touchdowns in the final 36 seconds.

Not only could the Broncos be without Talib, but DeMarcus Ware might be sidelined after tweaking a pre-existing back injury Sunday, per Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post.

Beating the Chiefs won't be easy, and the task would become that much more difficult for Denver without its best cover corner (Talib) and best pass-rusher (Ware).
