Jason Pierre-Paul Injury Update: Giants Star Ruled Active vs. Buccaneers

Daniel KramerNov 7, 2015

The New York Giants announced defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has been activated for the first time since losing his right index finger in a Fourth of July fireworks accident.

Thought to be lost for the season—and possibly his career—Pierre-Paul spoke to ESPN’s Josina Anderson about his return:

"

My confidence is high and can't nobody tell me different. Let me tell you, when guys say they know what pain is.

I feel like nobody in here knows what real pain is like. I know what it feels like. Even if I get a nick here or there, my mindset is different about overcoming things because I'm just so happy to be playing.

I'm going to be the same JPP that can run to the quarterback out there and make everybody around me better. I'm starting to do that already.

How effective he’ll be is speculation. He’s reportedly been practicing with a specialized glove, as shown by ESPN’s Dan Graziano:

JPP reported to the team last week after disputing contract negotiations with the Giants over his franchise tag, which was applied in March but not signed due to health concerns. The Giants rescinded their long-term offer of $60 million two days after the incident. The parties finally reached a one-year deal on Oct. 27.

Sunday will be Pierre-Paul’s first game since Dec. 28 of last year, in which he posted two sacks and five tackles against the Philadelphia Eagles.

New York placed linebacker Jon Beason on injured reserve to account for Pierre-Paul’s addition to the 53-man roster.

The Giants sit atop the lackluster NFC East at 4-4 and are desperately looking to improve their pass rush after the defense allowed seven touchdown passes to Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints last week. Pierre-Paul was one of the game’s best on the defensive line, but Sunday will be a revealing indication if there's any hope for his effectiveness following such a significant injury.
