Kansas Student Wins $10K After Basketball Director Makes Half-Court Shot

Thomas DuffyJun 8, 2018

The Kansas Jayhawks held their “Late Night at the Phog” Friday night, and one student left with a heftier bank account than he entered with.

Jerrod Martin Castro won a check for $10,000 after Brennan Bechard, KU’s director of basketball operations, splashed a bomb from midcourt.

Players mobbed him in celebration as head coach Bill Self signed the check right there at the scorer’s table:

Rich Sugg explained the event for the Kansas City Star:

"

In one contest, participants could choose someone to shoot from beyond the halfcourt line, and a successful shot would win the contestant $10,000. The first chosen shooter, former Jayhawk Darnell Jackson, airballed his attempts, but Brennan Bechard, another former Jayhawk and the team’s current director of basketball operations, delivered a swish.

"

So yes, this was real. And it was also amazing for Castro.
