Tuesday Recap

Top seed Wawrinka was tested in first round by Stepanek, who won 71 per cent of his first serve points, according to ProTennisLive.com. However, the Swiss superstar responded with a world-class display of baseline tennis.

Wawrinka led 4-1 in the first set, only to see his opponent rally, bringing the score to 5-5. A vital break saw the favourite attain the advantage and avoid a tiebreaker.

Before the match, Wawrinka was cautious about his chances, saying, per ATPWorldTour.com: “Radek is a tough match. I’ve lost many times against him. He’s an aggressive player, using some serve and volley. He doesn’t give you too much rhythm. So I’ll have to be ready, I’ll have to relax.”

Wawrinka will now face Japanese wild card Tatsuma Ito in the second round.

Gilles Muller pulled out the performance of the day as he beat hotly tipped South African Kevin Anderson in consummate style. The Luxembourg player moved through the gears to take a 6-2, 6-3 romp.

He will now face Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, who advanced to the second round after a foot injury forced Sam Groth to retire after 38 minutes. Chardy was in control of the match, winning the first set, but he will now face a much tougher opponent.

Steve Johnson was also in a similar position to Chardy, with his opponent Bernard Tomic forced to retire due to illness. Johnson was on the verge of winning, but he advanced without having to serve for the tie.

Qualifier Mikhail Youzhny lived with Gilles Simon for large parts of their battle, but the Frenchman had too much class for his less illustrious opponent, winning the match 6-4, 6-4.

It was an easy day for Cypriot Baghdatis who comfortably disposed of Fernando Verdasco in his match on Tuesday, beating the Spaniard 7-5, 6-1.

And Austin Krajicek will be pleased with his first-round effort against fellow qualifier Matthew Ebden, with a hard fought 5-7, 7-6, 7-6 victory.
