Multiple Teams Asking About Kane; Team Hasn't Asked Star to Waive No-Trade Clause

Thursday, Sept. 3

According to a Sept. 2 report from Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times, even though it's not certain the Blackhawks will trade Kane, many teams around the NHL have contacted them about a deal:

"

At least five teams contacted the Hawks once the Buffalo News first reported the investigation—which involves Kane and a woman at his Hamburg home—and said they’d be willing trade partners should the Hawks decide to cut ties with their superstar winger, according to a league source.

"

However, despite the inquiries, the Blackhawks have not asked Kane to waive his no-trade clause, per Scott Powers of ESPN.

In August, Dan Herbeck, Lou Michel and Tim Graham of the Buffalo News reported that Kane is being investigated by police in Hamburg, New York, after a woman accused the 26-year-old of sexual assault.

Lazerus' article mentions that Chicago's front office had "sternly warned" Kane to avoid any situation that could potentially hurt him and the organization following a 2012 incident during Cinco de Mayo when he was photographed publicly intoxicated.

Following the rape accusation against Kane, Lazerus posted an article listing multiple incidents from Kane's past, including a 2009 arrest after an incident with a cab driver. He eventually pleaded guilty to a non-criminal charge.

Kane is certainly one of the most talented players in the NHL. He's a four-time All-Star with three Cups under his belt already and has averaged at least one point per game in each of the past three seasons.

The Blackhawks gave Kane an eight-year, $84 million contract extension last summer that starts this season. His status, one way or the other, will be up in the air until the current investigation is concluded.

It seems unlikely that Chicago would deal Kane at this point, but his history off the ice does present a scenario in which the franchise could be inclined to move in a different direction.
