Capital One Cup 2015: Final 2nd-Round Score, Recap and 3rd-Round Fixtures

Everton twice came back from the brink of defeat to eventually beat Barnsley 5-3 after extra time and advance to the third round of the Capital One Cup. A brace from Romelu Lukaku helped spare the Premier League side's blushes.

Barnsley initially stunned the Toffees by going two goals in front. Striker Sam Winnall and forward Marley Watkins gave the League One side a strong advantage at half-time.

Toffees boss Roberto Martinez started Chelsea target John Stones against his former club, with the London club's interest reported by Dominic Fifield of the Guardian. But the 21-year-old central defender's presence couldn't halt the series of calamities Everton experienced at the back.

Sky Sports pundit and ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher couldn't resist poking fun at Stones' and Everton's plight, per his personal Twitter feed:

But there was nothing funny about Everton's comeback. Kevin Mirallas and Steven Naismith evened things after the break. 

Mirallas' strike, an acrobatic half-volley after a Lukaku knockdown, was a particular highlight, per Sky Sports Football:

But Barnsley refused to buckle. Arsenal loanee Dan Crowley prodded them back in front before the hour mark.

Yet that only gave Belgian striker Lukaku the chance to play spoiler. He broke Barnsley hearts with an equaliser 13 minutes from time.

In truth, it was what Everton deserved. Martinez's team had been the driving attacking force of the tie. Lukaku, Mirallas and company had peppered the Oakwell goal, especially during the second half.

Still, the Toffees had to wait until extra time to take their first lead of the night. Brilliant work from the irrepressible Gerard Deulofeu caused Barnsley defender Marc Roberts to turn the ball over the line.

After some heroic blocks from Phil Jagielka and the crossbar coming to Everton's rescue in the second half of extra time, Lukaku officially got his second.

The goal continued Lukaku's impressive scoring run since he first joined Everton, according to Bluekipper.com:

Following the game, Martinez was full of praise for Deulofeu, per the club's official site: “He was outstanding when he came on. His pace, penetration and ability in one-v-one situations was something that inspired our second-half performance."

Now the Toffees face an away trip to Championship outfit Reading, semi-finalists in last season's FA Cup. But Liverpool Echo writer Ian Doyle is more worried by what being dragged into extra time will mean for Everton's next Premier League match:

There's definitely a derby feel to the draw. Arsenal's short trip to north London enemy Tottenham Hotspur is the standout fixture.

But Aston Villa and Birmingham City won't want to be overshadowed in their renewal of Midlands hostilities.
