James, the youngest son of LeBron James, made his college debut on Monday. He played just six minutes and missed all three of his field-goal attempts in Arizona's 84-75 loss to No. 22 UCLA.
Thursday night's matchup against Cal Poly provided James with more runway to get his feet wet as he continues to acclimate himself to college basketball. His first bucket came on a catch-and-shoot three early in the first half.
James was part of the 2025 recruiting class and opted to redshirt during his true freshman season. Head coach Tommy Lloyd explained in February the move was part of a "long play" to give James a proper development window that maximizes his ability.
"The redshirting decision was just a long play, to give Bryce the most options in his career as his career unfolds," Lloyd said. "I have real strong belief that Bryce will be a contributor at Arizona in the near future. He's really shown a lot of progress, not only learning our system but just physically maturing."
There is still plenty of room for James to grow, and he will be doing it in a high-profile environment. Arizona entered the season ranked No. 5 in the AP Top 25 preseason poll.
Next up for James and the Wildcats will be a home game against Northern Arizona on Tuesday.
