Jets' Garrett Wilson Won't Request Trade, NFL Insider Calls Out 'Baseless' Rumors
Despite the New York Jets' struggles this year, Garrett Wilson has no plans to ask for a trade.
The star wide receiver said he hasn't and won't ask for a trade, and said he wants to be in New York. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport noted that "baseless trade speculation" has gone "nuts" leading up to the deadline.
The fact that Wilson's name is coming up in trade speculation shouldn't be much of a surprise, considering he's one of the team's most valuable pieces and the Jets are more likely to be sellers than buyers.
Wilson, who is in his fifth season with the Jets, has recorded 444 yards and three touchdowns on 37 receptions so far this year. Amid a rough game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Wilson appeared to be having a heated conversation with quarterback Geno Smith, only adding to speculation that he could be unhappy.
Head coach Aaron Glenn downplayed that altercation.
"Well, I think sometimes that's overblown as far as what people think is happening," Glenn told reporters. "Sometimes those conversations could be totally something else. And, listen, I know for a fact that Geno and Garrett, it was more or less, 'Man, let's get going and let's get the offense going' more than guys bickering at each other. I know what type of player Garrett is. I know what type of player Geno is, and I know where their heart's at, too."
Wilson also addressed the conversation after the game, saying he and Smith "were collaborating."
Despite never having reached the playoffs during his time in New York, Wilson has been, somewhat surprisingly, optimistic about the team. He called the Jets' playoff chances "very realistic" before the start of the season.
"I mean, I think it should happen, I'll say that," Wilson said in September. "It's our job to go play ball and do it, but that's how I feel about it."
The Jets are now 2-5 and still have some of their toughest opponents ahead of them, so it makes sense for New York to trade some of its pieces before the deadline as it looks to build for the future.
Whether Wilson will be on the move remains to be seen.
