5-Star SF Asa Montgomery Makes Commitment Decision Between Duke, UNC, UConn, LSU and More
Five-star forward Asa Montgomery made his decision, confirming Wednesday to Rivals' Joe Tipton he committed to Duke.
Montgomery is the No. 8 overall player and third-best small forward in 247Sports' composite rankings for 2027. He's the top-ranked player in the class to have made a commitment so far.
Along with the Blue Devils, the Georgia native made formal visits to Georgia Tech, LSU, North Carolina and UConn.
Montgomery averaged 18.9 points and 10.3 rebounds as a junior at Hillgrove. His production on the EYCL circuit was even better as he led everyone in scoring (27.9 points) while hauling in 10.2 boards over 14 games.
Montgomery also made a strong impression at the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup this past summer, putting up 9.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per contest en route to winning a gold medal. That run included a 23-point outburst in the round of 16 against Cameroon.
247Sports' director of scouting Adam Finkelstein wrote how playing in the EYCL and representing Team USA allowed Montgomery to showcase himself in two very different roles. He enjoyed a lot of offensive freedom with Athletes Of Tomorrow and then had to be a supporting player on the United States.
"Those two experiences provide a range of what he could become in the future, both right away at the next level, and then farther down the road as he continues to develop," Finkelstein said. "At 6'6" with a 6'10" wingspan and naturally broader frame, he's best described as a combo-forward who is transitioning from more of a stretch-four into a bigger wing.
"He's an explosive vertical athlete off two feet who has a good sense of timing, both in transition and as a cutter. He's not necessarily a dynamic creator with the ball in his hands, but he's a consistent shooting threat who can pick-and-pop, attack close-outs, play out of the mid-post, and go to the offensive glass."
Montgomery's stock has risen a lot over the last year. He closed out 2025 at No. 72 in the 247Sports' composite ranking and was 67th in mid-May before climbing into the top 10.
Getting a scholarship offer from Duke solidifies how much he has turned heads.
He's the third player to pledge his future to the Blue Devils, joining 5-star forward Kager Knueppel and Australian guard Luke Paul.
Jon Scheyer and his staff have excelled on the recruiting trail since he succeeded Mike Krzyzewski. Duke has consistently boasted a top-five class with Cameron Williams and Deron Rippey Jr. headlining the 2026 haul.
Montgomery is unlikely to be the last 5-star standout to choose Durham, North Carolina, as his next destination.
