UConn HC Dan Hurley's Heated Altercation With Ref Recreated as Halloween Decoration in Viral Photo
A restaurant in Wethersfield, Connecticut, used Halloween decorations to recreate a memorable moment involving UConn head men's basketball coach Dan Hurley from last season.
Outside The Charles restaurant, two scarecrows are standing nose-to-nose, with one dressed as Hurley and the other dressed as a referee:
Late in UConn's Elite Eight NCAA tournament game against Duke last season, Braylon Mullins hit a three-pointer to give the Huskies a 73-72 lead with less than one second remaining.
Amid the celebration, Hurley was seen approaching a referee and bumping heads with the official:
Many were confused by the interaction, and there were legitimate questions regarding whether Hurley would be punished with a fine or even a suspension.
After the fact, Hurley appeared on the Triple Option podcast (h/t ESPN) and explained what happened between him and official Roger Ayers.
"Really, at that point in the game, we had it won," Hurley said. "And [Ayers is] such an easy guy to work with during the game, that I thought he was coming over to chest-bump me to celebrate the shot."
Hurley was not disciplined for the interaction, and UConn went on to reach the National Championship Game where it fell 69-63 to Michigan.
While Hurley's reaction to the creative decoration isn't yet known, Matt Norlander of CBS Sports posted Thursday on X that he showed a photo of the scarecrows to Hurley.
