Sean McVay Reportedly Eyed by Amazon for 'TNF' Role amid Kirk Herbstreit Contract Extension

Four years after Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay considered stepping away from the sidelines to become a broadcaster, Amazon is still keeping the door open for him to join the Thursday Night Football team in the future.

Per The Athletic's Andrew Marchand, Kirk Herbstreit has agreed to a contract extension with Prime Video to remain part of the Thursday Night Football broadcast crew.

However, Marchand noted the agreement with Herbstreit offers Amazon some "flexibility" to get out of the deal "if one of its top targets, like Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay, becomes available" in the future.

Coming off the Rams' Super Bowl 56 victory in February 2021, reports started coming out that McVay could be offered a deal worth more than $15 million annually if he ever wanted to move into broadcasting.

Marchand reported Amazon was prepared to give McVay a deal worth up to $100 million over five years.

After a difficult 2022 season in which injuries to several key players led to the Rams finished with a 5-12 record, McVay went through a period when it was unclear if he would continue coaching.

In February 2023, The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue reported throughout the 2022 season McVay "spiraled under a wave of self-destruction, fatigue, grief and frustration."

McVay admitted earlier this year on the Bussin with the Boys podcast (h/t Ryan Anderson of the California Post) that he felt like "a fraud" during the 2022 campaign.

"The reality is, I would have been quitting because I couldn't handle the losing. It was almost like a scarlet letter," McVay added.

The Rams announced in January 2023 that McVay informed the club he was returning as head coach.

If McVay were to walk away from coaching to go into broadcasting, his asking price will almost certainly be significantly higher than what Amazon was reportedly offering in 2022.

Tom Brady is currently the highest-paid NFL broadcaster with a $37.5 million annual salary from Fox.

Troy Aikman is currently making $18 million per season from ESPN as the color commentator for Monday Night Football. He is in the final year of his current deal with talks between the two sides expected to wait until after the Super Bowl.

Exact details of coaching contracts are hard to come by, but as of September 2025, McVay was believed to be making $15 million annually from the Rams.

Since the first — and to date, only — losing season of his coaching career in 2022, McVay has led the Rams to the playoffs in each of the last three seasons. They lost in the NFC Championship Game to the Seattle Seahawks in January.

McVay owns a 93-59 overall record with seven playoff appearances, two trips to the Super Bowl and one victory in 10 seasons as Rams head coach.
